Authorities in Lompoc have launched an extensive manhunt following the escape of an inmate from the Federal Correctional Complex on Thursday.
Marcos Castaneda, 44, was reported missing from the minimum-security satellite camp adjacent to the main prison complex around 9:30 a.m., sparking immediate action from law enforcement.
Castaneda’s disappearance was reportedly noted during a routine check at the satellite camp, which houses approximately 300 male offenders across two low-security units. Castaneda is serving a 20-year sentence for a drug-related offense involving 500 grams or more of methamphetamine.
Described as a Hispanic male, 6 feet 1 inch tall, and weighing 280 pounds, Castaneda has black hair and brown eyes. His profile and details have been widely disseminated as part of the ongoing search efforts.

Officials have emphasized the nature of the security at the satellite camp, noting that inmates there are not surrounded by high-security features like razor-wire fences. Instead, these inmates are typically assigned chores within the prison grounds and are accounted for at designated check-in times.
In response to the escape, local authorities and the U.S. Marshals Service are coordinating closely. They urge anyone with information on Castaneda’s whereabouts to come forward, advising the public to contact the U.S. Marshals Service directly at 805.346.2728.
