Inmate Dies in County Jail

Source: Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office

Just after 2:10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, Sheriff’s Custody Deputies responded to a request for assistance for an attempted suicide inside the Main Jail. A custody deputy called for help when he discovered 47-year-old Joseph Frederick Rose in need of medical assistance after an apparent suicide attempt.

Upon discovering Rose, Custody Deputies and Jail Medical staff immediately began life-saving measures which continued until paramedics arrived and took over. At approximately 2:30 p.m. Rose was transported by American Medical Response to the hospital for treatment. He remained in the hospital until he succumbed to the injuries he sustained at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2019. Rose was pronounced dead by hospital staff.

Rose, originally from Honolulu, was booked into County Jail on April 10, 2018, with charges of felony burglary, battery, and a probation violation. Rose remained in custody until his death.

Rose’s next of kin has been notified. While his death appears to be a suicide, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office is conducting a death investigation to determine an official cause and manner of death. A final determination is pending toxicology and lab results.

  1. LUVADUCK: do you have any idea how many people are arrested, taken to jail, then released without being charged? It happens frequently so the solution may not be as simple as “just stay out of jail”!

  2. Wonderful. The Sheriff is investigating what the Sheriff did in monitoring and what the Sheriff did in intervening and what the Sheriff did in identifying the mental/suicide ready nature of the inmate. See yesterday’s Grand Jury Report on how likely this is to lead to improvements in the jail operation.

  3. The SB Sheriff is an incompetent and backwards disgrace. The jail has been crumbling for years if not decades and they spend their resources on boondoggles and making token pot busts. I’d like to know how many panga boats land above Goleta. The last raid they did on those was right before Sheriff Bill’s reelection.
