At approximately 2:30 pm on February 19, 2021, custody staff at the Santa Barbara County Main Jail conducting routine security checks discovered 30-year-old Michael Anthony Remijio unresponsive in his cell.  Remijio was hanging from a bedsheet he fashioned as a ligature in an apparent suicide attempt.  Custody staff immediately rendered aid and called for jail medical staff and paramedics to respond.

Remijio was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries approximately an hour later.  Remijio’s next of kin have been notified.  Although this appears to be an apparent suicide, the Sheriff’s Office is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.  The Sheriff / Coroner’s Office will conduct further investigation to determine the cause and manner of his death.

Remijio was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on 2/18/21 at 8:53 pm for a Ventura County warrant issued for failure to appear on charges of driving on a suspended license and driving under the influence.

I would have thought that he would have only been in custody for a few hours, while they just ran him through the booking process.

I've heard that most suicides happen at "dips" and that if intervention was timely, potential suicides would choose differently. (Dips--call them what you will--occur when a confluence of events/moods make "s*** happens" into despair.) Getting jailed for failure-to-appear was probably the last straw for him. That he didn't appear may have been b/c he was so depressed, he couldn't. Life isn't fair, but there's no way it can be. Think of the difference being born with prenatal care into a loving, economically secure family or being born in to a single, drug-addicted squatter makes.

This is so incredibly sad. So young, such a minimal charge (compared to other charges). To abandon all hope... god, just so sad.

Our process is confusing. We booked someone into jail for failure to appear for a drunk driving charge in Ventura. We don’t incarcerate a repeat offender who has burglarized homes, committed identity theft & fraud, who is in possession of stolen property & tear gas when arrested. How does that make sense?

I guess because it was an out-of-county warrant, they didn't have the option to release him due to the Covid situation. Maybe they would have done so soon but the arrest and the death happened in the space of a day.

Very sad to hear about someone taking their own life. When life gets rough it can be really hard to see past it to what may be on the other side. When you're at the bottom it can feel impossible to believe that you can dig out of that hole...
