A woman hiking Grass Mountain near Los Olivos was rescued by a helicopter after breaking her ankle.

At 1:26 p.m., Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to a report of a hiker with a leg injury with two engines and one helicopter. Crews located the 59-year-old female approximately 1.5 miles up the trail and determined it was a broken ankle.

The hiker was unable to get down the hill and hoist rescue was performed via helicopter. The woman was transported to the Santa Ynez airport where an ambulance transported her to the local hospital.

That video though, what was the item that came flying out of the helicopter? So glad it didn't end up in the tail rotor... would make a bad day worse for everyone involved.

I recommend anyone who hikes or rides up in the mountains look into https://www.airmedcarenetwork.com/ insurance. They offer protection from out-of-pocket costs in the event of medical air evacuation. The cost is minimal and the local CalStar system is integrated into the national network.

Probably about 50 years ago I saw a demonstration by the Forest Service about how they did their rescues in such situations. They put the person in a stretcher on a mule . Rescues sure are easier on everyone concerned now.
