An injured male hiker was airlifted from the San Ysidro Trail on Wednesday afternoon in a dramatic hoist rescue operation, initiated after a fellow hiker used a satellite messenger to call for help.

According to the Montecito Fire Protection District, the call for a trail rescue was received at 12:25 p.m. A female hiker, who was approximately two miles up the San Ysidro Trail, discovered the injured man.

Unable to get a cell signal in the remote area, she used a satellite communication device to text her husband, asking him to call 911.

Emergency dispatchers relayed the information, launching a multi-agency response that included Montecito Fire, Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue, and a Santa Barbara County Air Support helicopter, Copter 308.

Due to the hiker’s location on the trail, a hoist operation was required. Copter 308 located the patient, and a rescuer was lowered to secure him for the airlift.

The injured man was then safely hoisted into the helicopter and flown directly to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment.

The nature and extent of the hiker’s injuries were not immediately available. The successful rescue highlights the seamless coordination between local emergency response teams.
