Increase in Thefts at Local Fitness Centers

The Santa Barbara Police Department has received an increased number of reports involving thefts from lockers at local fitness centers. The incidents involve patrons either leaving their locker unsecured or a suspect or suspects opening a combination style lock that was secured on the locker. Unfortunately, the combination style locks appear to be less effective and/or secure than a lock requiring a key. Suspects are able to open the combination lock without damaging the lock or leaving obvious signs of forced entry.

In the most recent cases, the suspect or suspects remove only the credit cards from the wallet or purse.  Then, almost immediately they utilize the stolen credit cards to purchase items or gift cards.  The suspect(s) leave the wallet or purse behind in what appears to be an attempt to provide more time to use the credit cards for fraudulent transactions.  Please be sure to check and review your belongings thoroughly upon return to your locker. If you determine you have had property stolen please contact the Police Department to report it.  Also, please keep this possible problem with combination locks in mind when locking any storage unit, carport storage area, or outdoor shed.
