Improvements to Glen Annie/Storke Road Offramp

Caltrans District 5 and the City of Goleta are working cooperatively to improve conditions at the US Highway 101 northbound off-ramp at Glen Annie/Storke Road in Goleta. This location has experienced a higher level of vehicular traffic during peak hours resulting in delays and congestion which can extend to the beginning of the US 101 off-ramp.
Caltrans traffic engineers recently collected vehicular data and inspected the ramp. Their work suggested that improvements to the ramp such as trimming vegetation for sight distance and installing a recommended speed sign of 45 mph would help alleviate the congestion along the long off-ramp. Caltrans will continue to monitor the off-ramp to determine if any further improvements are necessary.
Caltrans, the City of Goleta and Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG), the transportation planning agency for this region, are also looking at future solutions and funding to address congestion along US 101 west of Fairview Avenue. This collaboration is intended to find long-term solutions to the operational efficiency of the Glen Annie/Storke Road northbound off-ramp and US 101 in the Goleta area.
City of Goleta Mayor Paula Perotte said, “We appreciate Caltrans working with Goleta to assure the safety of people using this key off ramp. We are glad that additional solutions are being considered for implementation in the near future.” Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway construction zones.
For traffic updates in Santa Barbara County, motorists may call Caltrans District 5 Public Affairs at 805-549-3318 or visit their website: https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-5.

Jun 29, 2020 11:00 AMYeah, new signs should fix the backup on the 101! That's the kind of thinking that won WWII for us. And if by miracle Caltrans should make widening the 101 an actual project, I bet you that they make it 4 years to do the work similar to the Carpinteria widening. Which is taking longer than WWII to finish. I wonder how long it will take to widen the 101 through Montecito? I hear the over/under in Vegas is 20 years.

Jun 28, 2020 11:50 PMA lot of people foresaw this problem when 101 was widened only to Fairview, when it should have been made 3 lanes all the way to Hollister/Cathedral Oaks. Maybe it was a money problem, but the writing was on the wall as soon as the water moratorium ended. Like 101/Milpas to the south this will be a 20 year problem.

Jun 28, 2020 09:04 AMWhat a bunch or morons at every level. They cram more and more housing and shopping into Storke/Glen Annie/Hollister and are surprised at the congestion? Oh..and what a brilliant solution - a 45 mph sign! Yep, how are those 65 mph signs working on 101? I have a 35 mph sign in front of my house (Cathedral Oaks/Foothill) and traffic routinely does anywhere from 45 to 60 with the County and State refusing to enforce the posted limit.

Jun 28, 2020 08:36 AMSort of off topic, but not really.....why not fix that disastrous Fairview debacle while they are working in the area? 101 narrows to 2 lanes right where the Fairview ramp dumps more cars onto 101.

Jun 28, 2020 09:40 AMThis has been talked about multiple times. The solution is, of course, to do nothing.

Jun 28, 2020 08:25 AMI don't think making a 3rd lane that connects Los Carneros to Storke is a good idea. The Mission on ramp, Pueblo off ramp in Santa Barbara is such a construction. Too many times I have accelerated up Mission on ramp to freeway speed, only to have someone wanting to exit on Pueblo who pull in front of me and slow down, rather than merging behind me. Haste makes waste, and for an unsafe traffic situation.

Jun 27, 2020 04:05 PMOne thing that would definitely help would be to make the Los Carneros onramp to NB 101 a continuous, separate lane to the Glen Annie/Storke offramp. That arrangement works very well in the few places where it has been done.

Jun 27, 2020 01:47 PMCaltrans build it, then does studies to see what's up, then they'll come back with some Trillion dollar plan. Nothing but an over priced jobs program. Someone find Occam.

Jun 27, 2020 01:13 PMPre Covid-19, the traffic would come to a standstill on North 101 beginning at the Fairview offramp at approximately 4pm on weekdays. Who would have thought that we would ever have rush hour traffic? We never had this problem until the City of Goleta built all of the high density housing off of Los Carneros and Glen Annie/Storke. The only way to remedy this situation is to widen the freeway. Our once small community has been forever ruined.

Jun 27, 2020 12:09 PMSo Goleta allows all this development to happen, then blames Caltrans for congestion on the ramp? Seems like Goleta should have been working with Caltrans before all the development started to happen. At any rate, I'm with Mattyboy, trimming trees and suggestion signs aren't going to fix anything.

Jun 27, 2020 09:32 AMTrimming trees and a speed suggestion sign would solve congestion? Riiiiight. How about extending the left turn & center (straight/left turn) lanes back toward the freeway to easily accommodate 100-200% more exit traffic?
