I drive by these encampments daily. I report them to Caltrans. They are doing their best to remove them. Union Pacific also need to get with the program. How they can see what is going on all along their easements is beyond me. Many foreign tourists ride the rails. If they look out the windows between Goleta and LA, they must return to their countries thinking CA is in bad shape. Union Pacific should be held accountable to perpetuating these encampments. Look along the tracks near Storke Rd. off ramp. People are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for these condos that are 50 yards from encampments, warming fires, etc. How does one get in touch with Union pacific to clean up this situation?

My heart goes out to the Mom with a daughter on the streets. A neighbor boy who grew up with my kids did the same thing. He had plenty of other options but wanted to be homeless and hang with his pack of others in the same game. When his godfather died and left him $10,000 he moved to Oregon for a new start but was back in no time. Rented a house for all his cohorts to live with him until the money ran out then went back to the streets. He kept getting into trouble and was often in the News-Press. His grandfather was so embarrassed he moved out of town because no help offered was accepted. Finally alcohol and drugs took it's total and he died, way too young. He was a sweet person and gave me big hugs when I ran into him around town. Heartbreaking!

For everyone who is still not convinced of the hurricane like devastation that alcoholics leave in their path to maintaining perpetual drunkenness, and their chief motive for getting drunk in the first place (hint: it's not bravery), hear it from the people who routinely suffer from others' alcoholic behavior (because they believe they must), and somehow nevertheless survive it: al-anon.org/newcomers , teenchallengeusa.com , and aa.org

It appears that she doesn't want to grow up yet. Maybe one day it will dawn on her as she comes to realize the lack of fulfillment that comes with this way of life. In the meantime I hope she stays safe.

I'm sorry your daughter made that choice. Have you tried to talk her out of it? Being "free" is fine and dandy until it isn't.

Drug use is prevalent too. My daughter has chosen to be homeless, something about it appeals to her... Doesn't have to go to college, or work, or follow society's rules. She doesn't have to pay rent, or bills, or maintain a car... She's 20, and making the choice. There are a lot of people like her, then there are others with mental illness too. It's not a cookie cutter, one-size-fits-all issue unfortunately.
