On October 24, 2021, around 2:00am, Santa Barbara Police Combined Communications Center received a frantic call regarding a medical emergency occurring at a residence located on Broadmoor Plaza. It was reported a 53-year-old male had collapsed in his bathroom with an unknown medical condition and required paramedics.
AMR Paramedics and Santa Barbara City Fire Department responded to the home to render aid. While responding, a Santa Barbara Police Dispatcher was providing emergency medical dispatch (EMD) instructions to the reporting party over the phone. Fire department personnel and paramedics arrived and conducted CPR on the patient tirelessly. Tragically, the man passed away.
Officers arrived on scene and started an investigation and learned the male subject had been involved in a traffic collision several hours earlier in the 900 block of North Hope Ave. The man, and a friend were both independently riding mopeds around midnight and accidently collided with each other. Both subjects were thrown from their mopeds and landed on the roadway. Both seemed to be uninjured and remounted their vehicles and traveled to another friend’s house. While at the friend’s home, the 53-year-old started experiencing chest pains, was not feeling well, and decided to go home. Once at home his condition deteriorated quickly, and he was pronounced dead at his home on Broadmoor Plaza.
California state collision reporting guidelines deem any collision where death occurs because of injuries sustained in a collision within 30 days of that collision shall be deemed a fatal traffic accident. It appears at this time the earlier collision was directly linked to the death of the male subject.
The Santa Barbara Police Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene of the accident. This incident is still under investigation. The decedents name is being withheld pending notification of family.

Oct 25, 2021 12:38 PMMopeds, electric bike behave in totally inconsiderate ways.
Go to the State street Farmers' market on Tuesday PM . Blocks of the market area are clearly marked as : No bicycles, no Skate Board, No Rollers, Restricted to passerby . Yet there is a constant stream of mopeds, bicycles, rollers and other sorts of vehicles going through with full contempt for people walking there.
And I have NEVER seen a single cop trying to put an end to this dangerous situation !

Oct 25, 2021 01:01 PMIs this a threadjack or did his death have something to do with the Farmers Market...full contempt is just another example of the rampant lawlessness happening here.

Oct 25, 2021 11:46 PMEdhat wasn’t even runner up in the just released SB Independent best-of poll. Edhat used to win best local website every year. In edhat’s defense, the Independent awarded itself the winner of best local site which seems unethical.

Oct 25, 2021 01:01 PMCurious about the riding around at midnight and crashing into each other... hard not to assume that they were drinking and driving. This whole thing is random and tragic, very sorry for the family :(

Oct 25, 2021 03:38 PMI passed three moped riders along upper San Roque Rd (not far from accident site). We remarked that the Vesparado's were out. It seemed odd and somewhat dangerous to be on a Saturday night (joyriding at 10pm?), but to each his own...They were definitely zipping around on those things. I wonder if there was a third person involved...

Oct 26, 2021 07:29 AMStrange story. The guy obviously had a cardiac event, but like many men, he ignored it thinking he could tough it out... What that had to do with the scooter crash is a little beyond me. I wonder what the toxicology report will conclude?
Grown men playing Joust on scooters at midnight... Meth? Cocaine? Stupidity? Regardless, RIP fella and condolences to your loved ones.

Nov 02, 2021 09:58 PMManny was an amazing and caring person. He tirelessly volunteered at his sons schools - Vieja Valley and San Marcos High School. He was always served on the PTA boards. He was the type of parent you could count on to be there to help 24/7. This is such a heartbreaking tragedy. My sympathy goes out to his family. He will be missed in our community!!
