Sep 22, 2020 11:09 PMSo sorry for your loss. I too lost a beloved family member (age 38) to this horrible disease of addiction. I miss him every day. I really feel for everyone out there who is dealing with similar problems in their family & the pandemic making all aspects of life even more difficult. Sending my condolences to this man’s family & friends. His story sounds so familiar: A kind, sensitive, creative, talented and loved soul who was lost to an insidious & deadly disease. RIP

Sep 22, 2020 05:24 PMI had the joy of meeting Jon on more than one occasion . He was so well spoken and clever. He was such a fantastic author that he was able to give insight into a world of addiction that few could ever conceive of understanding. But he did, and did it well, through the humanization of all of our different pathways. His words will live on.

Sep 22, 2020 10:25 AMMy deepest condolences to the family of Jon. Losing a family member to addiction is so very painful. Most addicts are sensitive souls, intelligent and too sensitive for this harsh cruel world. My heart hurts for this family. Been there. Still there. May he rest in peace and love.

Sep 22, 2020 08:15 AMDear MADISONBAILEY, I am so deeply sorry for you, and your family's loss. My son passed on from alcohol addiction, so I share the uncertainty and tragic loss of a loved one. Please rescue his dog, it was his closest companion, and he would want you to. We had to save our son's, and pets grieve, too, when they lose their human. Sending love.

Sep 21, 2020 11:08 PMThis all shows that there is a lot more to an individual's life than a headline about their passing. Sympathy and an open mind are virtues we should try to practice.

Sep 21, 2020 04:48 PMHi,
This is Jon Vreeland’s niece. I am speaking on behalf of his daughters and the rest of his family. Just want you to know he is 41 not 48. He was a lot more than just a homeless drug addict. He was a wonderful writer and musician who impacted a lot of people’s lives in a positive way. Through his struggles, he loved his family and the people around him very much. I would appreciate if you kept the hurtful comments to yourself and remember that he has a family at home that sees these things during this hard time already.

Sep 22, 2020 09:14 PMHello MadisonBBailey,
I am very sorry for your family's loss. Jon was a colleague of mine, and was a fine person who overcame immeasurable obstacles. My heart goes out to you and Jon's lovely daughters, Alycia and Jon's parents. Jon was a special person with a huge heart. Although he struggled with demons as many do at varying times in one's life, Jon's love for his family was unparalleled. His love for his daughters was phenomenal. The fact that Jon overcame two addictions is a testament to his will too. He was a gifted man with a terrific sense of humor, always wanting to offer his assistance to others. People make assumptions without thinking about the souls that encase one's body and mind. I apologize to you on behalf of those that are insensitive and uncaring. God Bless you and your family at this time, I am sure Jon is caring for another up above.

Sep 22, 2020 12:16 PMThe comments on EdHat are often hurtful, inappropriate, inaccurate, etc. Moderating them to prevent this from happening would be better than your apology after the fact. Requiring people to use their real names would also help prevent them from hiding behind a handle and saying whatever they want because they are anonymous. If you truly cared about providing a way to promote discourse about the stories on EdHat, you would find a better way.

Sep 22, 2020 07:23 AMI apologize on behalf of Edhat for any hurtful comments that were posted here. Unfortunately people have their own issues with stories like this and it comes out in weird ways. The vast majority of Santa Barbarans send their condolences and sympathies in this sad time.

Sep 21, 2020 03:09 PMThank your lucky stars if you never put yourself into a position to try hard drugs, or you tried them but are not wired to be an addict. It seems like a large number of people are not lucky in this way. I just remember that Carroll O'Connor commercial where he growls- Get between your kids and drugs any way you can.
