Santa Barbara Sheriff (Edhat)

The identities of two people killed in a wrong-way traffic collision on Highway 101 in Santa Maria last month have been released.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff Coroner have identified the driver as 30-year-old Arnol Hernandez Zuniga and the passenger as 30-year-old Adrian Rojas-Ramirez, both from Santa Maria.

On December 30, 2023, around 11:30 p.m., California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Santa Maria firefighters responded to northbound Highway 101 near the North Broadway interchange for a reported traffic collision.

Initial reports stated a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes had crashed into at least one other vehicle under the Broadway overpass and blocked all northbound traffic.

Heavy extrication was required to remove some of the passengers and vehicles sustained major damage.

CHP had closed all three northbound lanes due to the investigation and heavy debris.

Additional details regarding the collision have yet to be released.
