The AM radio signals of three area radio stations will be powered-off and silent over-the-air from December 7-9 during the City of Santa Barbara Public Works Department mandated work on the iconic 198 foot radio broadcasting monopole that has been a local landmark on the ocean side of Highway 101 near the corner of Garden and Yananoli streets for over 55 years.
The three stations that share the monopole, KZSB AM1290, KCLU 1340AM and, KOSJ 1490AM will continue to stream their regularly scheduled programming at am1290kzsb.com, kclu.org and oldschool1490.com for the duration of the three-day modification project.
The Rincon Broadcasting owned monopole that has been serving the area since 1965 on the City property at the Yanonali Street City Services Yard near the El Estero Water Resource Center is believed to be the only working tri-plexed broadcasting monopole in North America.
Pursuant to a requirement of the Rincon Broadcasting lease with the City of Santa Barbara, an analysis conducted by the Paul J. Ford & Company concluded that modifications were required to bring the monopole into compliance with the most recent American National Standards Institute and Telecommunications Industry “Structural Standard for Supporting Structures and Antennas.”
The broadcasting monopole modification work project will be completed by the one of the leading national tower engineering and construction companies, Tashjian Towers Corporation; telecommunications and electromagnetic engineering specialists from Hatfield and Dawson Consulting Engineers; and, Remote Possibilities principal, the Society of Engineers Certified Professional Broadcast Engineer, Richard Rudman.
