What are the legalities for hunting rabbits, squirrels and such on your own property? Not a ranch but a house with a yard but in city limits… Is a sling shot okay? Bow? Pellet gun? Save your hate comments btw, I am only asking to settle an argument with a friend. Not gonna do it.

It’s obviously legal to kill rats and gophers, so why not squirrels and rabbits?

if your in the county, not the city, this does not apply.
A private yard isn’t a “public place” though (regardless, this practice is very dangerous if you have even remotely near neighbors, presumably if you live in the city limits you do)
Go for the rats and gophers. Killing bunnies, squirrels, and other critters is regulated by the state DFW.
Short answer is NO regardless of property ownership.

Tree squirrels are regulated and have certain hunting months.
Ground squirrel is considered a Non-game animal and you can kill unlimited.
Jackrabbit is open no limit but you need a license.

What’s next? Hunting our neighbors’ cats, dogs, kids? I’ve had all three come into my yard, the #@!&! ing pests.
If your friend can’t outsmart a squirrel or rabbit without having to injure or kill them, he’s got bigger problems than rodents in his yard.
Rabbits and squirrels are overrunning the upper east. They’re cute, but destructive to plants and their burrows. I would never dispatch them. I’m expecting the coyotes to start roaming our neighborhood again since the game is plentiful.

@343532 2 1 SEP 10, 2019 04:18 PM. The rabbits you see in Santa Barbara and Goleta are Brush rabbits (a species of Cottontail). Little guys. We don’t have Jackrabbits around here. At least I have yet to spot one in the past 50 years or so, even up in the foothills.
Poor choice of words on my part. I meant the burrows that those critters make. They lead to erosion and slope instability.
I give the cats swimming lessons if they misbehave. Have yet to find one that didn’t know how.
