What are the legalities for hunting rabbits, squirrels and such on your own property? Not a ranch but a house with a yard but in city limits... Is a sling shot okay? Bow? Pellet gun? Save your hate comments btw, I am only asking to settle an argument with a friend. Not gonna do it.

Red squirrels are invasive exotics that displace the native grey squirrels. They are quite destructive to fruit crops and live to defoliate certain s to suck their sap and weaken or kill the trees. No bb or pellets in city limits.

936 PM - so funny! Ah - life in the County - so much simpler. But then, we would not have this stimulating discussion...

Rabbits and squirrels are overrunning the upper east. They’re cute, but destructive to plants and their burrows. I would never dispatch them. I’m expecting the coyotes to start roaming our neighborhood again since the game is plentiful.

Poor choice of words on my part. I meant the burrows that those critters make. They lead to erosion and slope instability.

If your friend can't outsmart a squirrel or rabbit without having to injure or kill them, he's got bigger problems than rodents in his yard.

Never had a squirrel or rabbit or raccoon or possum or ferret problem, eh? City slickers, pffffft

I give the cats swimming lessons if they misbehave. Have yet to find one that didn't know how.

Are you kidding me! If it doesn't effect anyone else around you or your neighbors do what you want

"How about prostitution?" No, you can't shoot prostitutes, regardless of property ownership, sex, or season. The "swimming lessons" probably won't work.

I don't think we want to know what LOCALMATT does on his property.

Localmatt - so just kill anything you want with whatever means as long as it doesnt "effect (sic)" your neighbors? How about prostitution? Can we start brothels as long as it doesn't affect our neighbors? What else can we do?

Depends.... Tree squirrels are regulated and have certain hunting months. Ground squirrel is considered a Non-game animal and you can kill unlimited. Jackrabbit is open no limit but you need a license.

@343532 2 1 SEP 10, 2019 04:18 PM. The rabbits you see in Santa Barbara and Goleta are Brush rabbits (a species of Cottontail). Little guys. We don't have Jackrabbits around here. At least I have yet to spot one in the past 50 years or so, even up in the foothills.

Regulations for rabbits and squirrels here, along with an email address in the opening pages for questions: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=169263&inline

Go for the rats and gophers. Killing bunnies, squirrels, and other critters is regulated by the state DFW. Short answer is NO regardless of property ownership.

"No person shall discharge upon any public street or in any public place in the City, any gun by means of which any missile is projected by means of a spring, bow or compressed air. (Ord. 3763 §2, 1975)" if your in the county, not the city, this does not apply.

A private yard isn't a "public place" though (regardless, this practice is very dangerous if you have even remotely near neighbors, presumably if you live in the city limits you do)

It's obviously legal to kill rats and gophers, so why not squirrels and rabbits?

Don't ask here! What the heck do you expect to get in response?! This thread will explode. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm retired and my info would be old, but do your research online for lawful activity. Call and speak with zoning, animal control, other applicable branches. ---------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ah, you're just asking Edhat readers to do your research for you!! lol. It is hard work, isn't it.
