Hundreds of community members marched through Carpinteria on Saturday to protest recent immigration enforcement operations targeting local marijuana farms. The event, dubbed the “ICE Out of Carp!” protest, brought together families, activists, and concerned residents who voiced their outrage at the raids conducted earlier this week by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies.

The demonstration was sparked by Thursday’s high-profile raid at Glass House Farms facilities in Carpinteria and Camarillo. Federal agents arrested 200 individuals as part of what the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) described as an investigation into immigration violations along with allegations of child labor exploitation. Protesters, however, questioned DHS’ claims and criticized the actions as oppressive, claiming the raids disrupted the community and unfairly targeted immigrant workers.

A Peaceful Yet Passionate Protest

Chanting “ICE out of Carp! ICE out of Carp!” as they marched through the streets of Linden Avenue and Carpinteria Avenue, demonstrators carried colorful signs with messages such as “No More Fear” and “Protect Our Workers.” The march was peaceful, yet the tone was one of deep frustration and determination.

“We came because we are furious that our government is sending masked police, with military weapons, to terrorize and disappear our Latino friends and neighbors, our teachers, food pickers, gardeners, health caregivers, and child caregivers,” said Marian Shapiro, a protester and local photojournalist. “These hardworking, tax-paying individuals are vital to our economy. They don’t deserve to be arrested, deported, or put in horrendous concentration camps without due process when they are not criminals. This is not what our country was founded on. It’s not who we are.”

Fallout from the Raids

The protests come in the wake of mounting public debate over federal immigration enforcement. DHS officials have defended Thursday’s raids, claiming they were necessary to address allegations of child labor violations and other criminal activity. Glass House Farms, however, has strongly denied these allegations. The company, which holds legal cannabis cultivation licenses in California, insists that it cooperated fully with federal authorities.

The controversy has drawn criticism even at the highest levels of state leadership. California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the raids as emblematic of a broader strategy of “chaos, fear, and terror.” The enforcement actions are part of a larger surge in immigration operations under the Trump administration, particularly in Southern California.

A Call for Change

Saturday’s protest is just the latest in a series of statewide actions organized by immigrant advocacy groups calling for an end to aggressive immigration enforcement. Organizers emphasized the need for reform that protects immigrant workers and their families.

A similar protest took place in Oxnard on Friday to protest the raid that took place in Camarillo. Hundreds of protestors took to the streets waving American and Mexican flags demanding that ICE stops terrorizing their communities.

As voices rise across Carpinteria and beyond, the community’s message is clear: local residents will not remain silent in the face of actions they believe erode the foundations of justice and compassion.

  1. STONER – “They are criminals, no matter how minimal the offense”

Hey Einstein, did you know that not all immigration offenses are crimes? Betcha didn’t, not with that big ol’ brain of yours. Overstaying a visa is a civil offense. That word means not criminal. Also, how about those hundreds of thousands of people of many nationalities (all from non-white countries) who just had their protections against deportation ripped away from them? They’re not criminals, they were here legally. You hate them too? Even the Afghans who helped us fight the Taliban who are now being sent home to have their children killed by them?

Now, when are you going to go demand the hundreds of thousands of white illegal immigrants (from Ireland, Russia, etc) living in Boston, Philly, etc, get rounded up by masked thugs and ripped from families too? Oh wait, those kind are ok, right?

Funny coming from a guy (or little girl, who knows) calling itself “Stoner.” So tell us, wannabe, did you only start smoking weed once it was legal? Of course not, you dunderheaded criminal. Even funnier coming from someone who voted for a criminal to run our country. A man who has admitted to sexual assault as well. Those crimes are ok thought, right? How about beating up police officers? You love it when the criminals white, right?

You’re clearly not very bright. Maybe fix that before you start crying about “criminals.” Racist moron.

  2. Wow these protests look like lots of fun! You know what’s not fun? 70,000 American fentanyl deaths a year, brought to you by US Citizens, their Mexican dealers, and Chinese factories. Let’s go protest and we can all feel better about ourselves while we ignore the war that is already in our midst, and has been for years.
