How to Mitigate COVID-19 in Rental Households?

Santa Barbara has many homes that are shared by more than one resident. In fact, many reside in shared-living situations or are families renting a room to supplement income. So what are people doing to lessen the impact of Covid19 in the home?

There are so many things to consider on how best to keep the house disease free. It’s especially difficult when certain people in a shared home have a totally different attitude then others in the house.

My experience is that we’re doing everything we can to keep the house clean and practicing all the safe social distancing and hygiene protocols. However, our roommate remains carefree and also works at a grocery store. This daily exposure to people and the lack of taking this as serious as we are is really concerning.

So what are other people doing? Are people having “family conversations” as to go over the “new house rules”? What’s the best way to enforce those rules without destroying relationships? All comments appreciated.

  1. I’m not completely positive, but I believe that if these supplemental renters have been there for a certain period (30 days or more???) and have paid rent, that is their legal residence, and cannot be given the boot…..you’d have to have them evicted.
