The Public Parking structure at Helena and Mason in the Funk Zone is supposed to have 123 parking places available on a first come first serve basis for the public or guests of the Hotel Californian. That was what the City approved.

The first 75 minutes are free, and $1.50 thereafter, as well as a daily maximum fee, although there's always a "Lot Full" sign up. Seems as if the public is blocked from parking there but hotel guests are not.

If you are down in the Funk Zone and need parking, go there first. Tell them that you won't move your vehicle until you get a public parking place, it is a public parking facility above ground. (People leave frequently and there are usually a lot of spaces inside that are available too.) The hotel will eventually open it up because a valet will need to park a vehicle. - Ignore the red neon sign or sandwich board sign saying LOT FULL or if they say it's for hotel guests only.

If someone won't let you park or you see a sign out email the City Council and tell them you want the parking conditions of Approval enforced. (SBCityCouncil@santabarbaraca.gov)

Canary Hotel is doing something similar. They were supposed to have free shuttles for guest to/from airport/train and around town. They were supposed to have enough parking. They don't. Their covenants are not worth the paper they are written on. The City knows it. What are they doing? They are writing an ordinance to allow Valet Parking into the parking structures. Valets have shuffled the tickets and if you park a car late in the day and leave in the morning guess what you pay for parking? $0.00. - City Council is getting screwed by the developers and hoteliers. Guess that's why they don't care if they screw residents over.

Hotel pulled the wool over the city's eyes. Want to make a bet? City won't be able to stop it and won't do a Damm thing about it. Murillo, Rowse, Friedman and Hart will rally around the hotel. - They screew residents regularly, so don't be surprised if it happens here.

thats what all these out of town developers want, soon as they build all the "stipulations" get ignored. Boom, where did the community go? out the door with your parking spaces

Every time I've been to an event with valet parking there is no set fee, you give them what you want (I usually do $5). I think this public parking issue needs to be cleared up, the hotel has no right to keep the public out. It should all be first come first served. I wonder if the hotel paid their part in the cost of building the structure. Even so, if it says public parking it's for the public.

I have been in that lot many times. Once it was actually full but the rest of the times spaces were abundant. The issue is the poor design of the lot. Two dead ends with no turn around. Sharp blind turns that hardly fit two cars. It's a mess!

Paid Parking = No Riff Raff. When the public uses the lot visitors to the hotel for weddings or corporate meetings may not find parking. Charging for parking commoditizes the parking space, earns revenue for the hotel and keeps the riff raff (public) out. Considering that the hotel has 137 spaces underground for the hotel as Valet Only and then is filling up the public parking with more hotel guests, it seems the City's parking requirement of 1 space per hotel room or 1 space per 500sf for commercial units is woefully inadequate. - With the new Coastal Plan it will be much much worse. Can you say Hello Manhattan West Coast?

Of course SBs thoughtful and talented mayor will get right on this. And DON'T act like the council is NOT complicit in this issue. Plausible deniability is not an action. The SB Council Knows EXACTLY what they signed up for. "Oh we'll pretend we don't see it and collect a few extra dollars in tax revenue while favoring a friend..hehe!!"

This is the worst designed parking lot, period. I have been to this lot 3 times, and the same horrible experience..... the “Lot Full” sign never goes on ( primarily because the Hotel has cordoned off half of one floor for their “Valet Parking” ) so it still spits out tickets to numbers of vehicles all trying to find non-existent spaces in a small tight space, ultimately all trying to turn around on the top level with nowhere to go causing huge jams and backlogs. On top of this small space to maneuver in there are those over-sized trucks that cannot fit into a space and stick out into the traffic lane causing more issues. You can pretty much guarantee a 15-20 minute wait once you’ve entered this mousetrap to try to get out after realizing there are no “ Public” spaces available. If you are going to designate a certain number of parking spaces to the Hotel Valets, then you need to reduce to total number of parking spaces but that number and let the public know that their public spaces are full before they get sucked into the this parking abyss....... OR , remove the Valet area and have all parking available to public and hotel while the hotel guests can get validation for their spaces

I went to Hotel Californian's restaurant Blackbird last Saturday. I waited outside the parking structure as several vehicles exited and the sign stayed "Full". I then had the hotel's valet park my car and they charged me $10.00 even though we went to their restaurant. By the way, Blackbird is not worth the hassle.

You waited for 20-30min min in a battle of wills against a valet parking attendant? Ohkay LocalinSB... I have to wonder if you're really a local because if you were , you'd know where there are a ton of parking spots less than 100yards away that you could have had for well beyond the 75min limit. This kind of stuff is what gives locals a bad name. Please try to be less entitled and more of a good citizen. Yelling at a kid who is just doing his measly job is not friendly, helpful or worth the time.

Could it be that they were making a point about parking? BINGO! You need evidence to build a case. The point was there was parking and the Hotel Californian feels entitled to KEEP the PUBLIC OUT, when they were required to provided parking in order to build the Hotel.

I was with someone who had a shop on Mason for many years, decades actually. We joked about parking in that now dirt lot. Yeah. We're local.

Parked in that lot with no problem, but it was a Tuesday. There were NO parking spots within 2 or 3 blocks in all directions.

they are probably telling their guests that the hotel has parking, for a fee - to justify their high rates (who wants to drive around looking for parking in that location, while paying a ton for a hotel room) and that is why they are undertaking efforts to block out spaces. they will continue to do so until they are caught so I encourage folks to complain.

Interesting......we got a spot today where you first enter. It looked like there was no other floor to park on. When we returned for our car, we walked further into the garage and around the corner. The light telling you “more parking” with an arrow to the right and down a ramp, was not lit up. Do you think the hotel disabled it?

All these first world parking problems...ay yo Cathy what happened? Though everyone was gonna magically start riding bikes everywhere in Santa Barbara. Seems our auto issue gets worse by the day. What exactly is your plan for this town?

Scooters and Skateboards. - That's what the Mayor want's people to drive around in. Transportation system doesn't work. Housing is getting more expensive because of the inaction of Murillo, Friedman, Hart and Rowse. They voted against residents and affordable housing and FOR DEVELOPERS in February. Developers want to use the parking structures downtown to parking cars for residential units and reduce their parking further. - The will be at City Council Tuesday at 3pm to storm the City about it. Watch them cave and give Developers what they want, our Parking Structures.

I've had the opposite experience. The "Lot Full" sign is never lit up but there are 0 parking spaces when going in. I thought the sign and parking ticket system was malfunctioning and not properly counting the vehicles going in and out.

I don't think the Hotel Californian runs it like the city parking lots. A friend told me that every time she's gone there was never parking. Her company had an event at the Hotel California and she paid for her parents to valet their car. The company reimbursed clients and they had to valet everything. Apparently no one could access the parking structure as a member of the public, but valets could for a hefty fee.

I helped build that structure. It's not very big. How do you know the lot isnt full? I've parked in that lot many times without issues.

Hotel Californian Parking Lot Full?

Last weekend and and this weekend the hotel blocked public from accessing the parking structure. I waited in my car, in a battle of wills, to wait for a car to leave so I could park. Between 10 and 15 left before I was allowed in. - The said parking was for hotel guests only. - They gave in and I expect that they will do the same again because of the backlash they will get. At the time there were ~20-30 spaces including the roped off area for "valet only" last weekend. This weekend there were more spaces available, but the hotel would not let the public park. Yesterday, a guy was backing up to leave because the attendant said the public could not park there. (I'd told him what to do, but he thought the attendant was correct.) About then a man came semi-running to the entrance to put the sandwich sign down and let the man in. - The Hotel Staff realized someone was on to the fact that they are actively discouraging the public from parking in the public parking structure using misleading signs and information. Once the first driver was in others were able to follow. - My take on all of this is that Hotel Californian will only do the right thing if you stand up to them. Otherwise they will put up signs and block the public from parking there. They want their customers to get the spaces and they want a hefty daily valet fee or parking fee... If you get blocked tell them you will wait for a space and email the City Council (SBCityCouncil@santabarbaraca.gov).
