Hot Moon
By John Wiley
Staying up late to watch the hills for any signs of fire Sunday night, we saw this ominous moon rising through smoke and shimmering heat waves.
A smoke map showed what the red was about, and our porch thermometer was still sizzling 92 to explain the shimmering.

Sep 07, 2020 07:35 PMI saw the "Hot Moon" too - so Red-Orange! It was surreal. Have never seen the moon reflect that color before. Strange to see how big an affect our smokes are having. Thanks for sharing the unique photo :)

Sep 07, 2020 09:21 PMThe Moon was reflecting white sunlight, but the smoke in our atmosphere was scattering the shorter wavelengths, leaving the red light to get to your eye.

Sep 07, 2020 03:00 PMIt’s like a heat lamp shining down on us during the night. Maybe that’s why it was still 83F in the house this morning.

Sep 07, 2020 08:02 PMThat’s wild MM, and sorry to hear about those temps. These past couple nights remind me of visiting my grandpa’s farmhouse in Kansas in the summer. The only relief was an electric fan so old it could lop a child’s hand off.

Sep 07, 2020 05:44 PM83? Can we come to your house? It was 101 degrees in our house this morning. We're now at 105, down from 107 a few hours ago... inside. Our cats are angry and demanding answers.

Sep 07, 2020 03:12 PMIt was nearly calm 101 @ 154 at midnight and high 90s temp, then half an hour later a gentle East wind started and it dropped ten degrees. Still 80s when I felt safe enough to turn in at 2am. Hope we're so lucky tonight.

Sep 07, 2020 03:14 PMLooked so weird we could hardly believe it. Looked more like a half-burnt out sun than moon due to the left edge shimmering in the heat waves when it first rose.
