Homeless Man Stabbed Downtown, Suspect Arrested

By the Santa Barbara Police Department
On January 29, 2023, at about 0635 hours the Combined Communication Center received several 9-1-1 calls reporting an injured and bleeding male near Anacapa Street and De La Guerra Street.
Officers located the victim, a middle-aged male believed to be homeless. The victim was suffering from a stab wound to the neck and was quickly transported to Cottage hospital by medics.
Patrol Officers began the investigation and Detectives were called in to assist. Officers from the Community Action Team (C.A.T) were able to assist and advance the investigation rapidly due to their relationships with people in the Santa Barbara community who are suffering from homelessness.
With information provided by community members, C.A.T Officers identified a suspect, and probable cause was developed to make an arrest.
Shortly after, the suspect identified as Mitchell Grant Grote (DOB 1/16/96), was located on Milpas Street and arrested for Attempted Homicide.
He was booked at Santa Barbara County Jail with a bail of $1,000,000. There are no suspects outstanding in this investigation.

Jan 30, 2023 02:54 PMThere was a site, SBcrimemaps but it doesn’t seem to be working anymore. I agree it would be very nice to see up to date crime statistics.

Jan 30, 2023 11:10 AMAbsolutely crucial for transparency, AKA timely police reports...which, yes, most cities supply. ...can read the Carpenteri paper for reports, for example. West Micheltorena, near Bath , has much "activity" that never gets reported...for another example among many.

Jan 30, 2023 01:38 PMExactly, there were ALWAYS police when we were teens! On foot, bikes, horses, motorcycles and cars... I feel like they were constantly downtown hassling my skateboard-riding friends and ticketing jaywalkers, etc. Honestly, it felt much safer back then. I think that our city shouldn't just have police down there but also security in many areas, like other cities do. I'm sure that our crime statistics are higher than any of us would expect.

Jan 30, 2023 10:58 AMSBSAND - good question. I would like to see those. They don't publish much it seems. For example, when they do the DUI checkpoints, unlike Santa Maria PD, the SBPD never publishes the results. It would be nice to be able to see stats for different areas of town, filterable by types of crime.
I gotta say though, when I was a teen, there were cops constantly walking up and down State and driving around on patrol. Every time I'm down there now, it's crickets (cop wise).

Jan 30, 2023 10:51 AMWe don't love the comment from Gimli but we are seeing a lot more violence lately in areas that should have more police or security presence. Does anyone know where we can access local crime stats?
