A temporary full closure of a popular hiking trail will begin on Monday, September 8, for environmental repair work.
Southern California Edison (SCE) is conducting the second phase of the Stream Restoration Project that will close lower Tunnel Trail from the Inspiration Point trailhead at the end of Tunnel Road.
The closure is expected to take three to four months and is necessary to preserve public and employee safety. No other front country trails will be closed due to the Stream Restoration Project
SCE’s Stream Restoration Project is aimed at repairing and restoring the environment in Mission Canyon. Construction for the first phase began in July 2024 and was complete on November 9, 2024.
The first phase completed the removal of rocks and debris from roadside and canyon walls, stabilizing disturbed areas to prevent erosion, and revegetation activities.
This second phase will include the removal of rocks and debris from stream bed and banks, reconstruction and revegetation of stream habitats, and monitoring of restoration efforts.
In 2019, road grading and vegetation management by SCE crews generated unintended environmental damages.
“This work was conducted as part of SCE’s regular maintenance of the Mission Canyon access road to ensure crews can safely reach electrical infrastructure that serves the Santa Barbara community. SCE deeply regrets that a breakdown in our processes led to this incident,” SCE states.
