Santa Barbara County firefighters rescued an injured hiker off Tunnel Trail Saturday afternoon and new reports state the hiker has passed away.

San Marcos High School Student Jake Parks, 17, has been identified as the hiker.

Santa Barbara County firefighters were dispatched to the Tunnel Trail for a reported medical emergency, according to SBCFD spokesperson Mike Eliason.

Initial reports stated an adult male sustained a heat-related emergency approximately 1-2 miles from the trailhead. Crews transported the victim down off the trail and transported him to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office-Coroner’s Bureau is investigating his death, which does not appear to be suspicious.
