Highway 154 is closed in both directions due to a head-on vehicle collision near the Cachuma Lake entrance.

At 8:41 a.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle collision 1/4 mile east of the lake entrance and found a pickup truck and passenger vehicle collided.

One female passenger needed extrication from the vehicle that took 15 minutes. She was assessed by paramedics and determined to have moderate injuries and transported to the CalStar 7 helicopter that landed in a field near Lake Cachuma. She was then transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

A juvenile female also suffered minor injuries and was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital by ground ambulance. The driver of the pickup suffered minor injuries and was assessed by paramedics on the scene but ultimately declined transport to the hospital.

Highway 154 is currently closed in both directions. CHP is investigating this incident.

@shorebird ----- Mine was the left-hand drive. Pale yellow, soft top & hard top. I googled it ,and there's pictures of both right-side steering & left-side steering..... The link won't post here, but if you do a Google search,.... " 1969 Datsun 2000 roadster" , then click on "images" ... ... you can see pictures of both side drives. And, I had just had the clutch replaced, which required the engine be pulled !!! It was hard to find a mechanic that knew what they were doing !!!

I only drove that fast on the straightaways , not on the curves.. !!! That particular car, was built for racing. Nicknamed, "Fair Lady" ... one of my biggest regrets was selling it.

D8vanilla, Am I remembering correctly.? The only “Fair Lady” I ever saw was a right hand drive car. I had a 5 speed 1977, Datsun 280Z. Speedometer went to 140 mph. I regret selling it too.

When I first got my 1969 Datsun 2000 (My Fair Lady), I took it up on the Pass 154, and when I reached 120 mph, I slowed down !!! Well, back in 1973, there wasn't any traffic (NONE), on the Pass 154, so I NEVER put anyone else in danger, just myself!

Wait my 1988 Datsun speedometer didn't even go past 85 mph. And I used to subconsciously lean forward when going up the grade like it would somehow make my car go faster. And yes someone passed me on the double lines just this week. Glad I drove in to work early today.

2 days ago a driver on 154 passed me on the double line while I was driving the speed limit of 55mph and he nearly hit a vehicle coming the other direction head on. The innocent driver had to swerve to avoid the guy in a hurry. Then when I got to the bottom there he was. I pulled behind him at the stop light on State! It’s gotten really dangerous on that road with crazies like that guy.

Totally agree. I feel like a paranoid lunatic saving it but I’ve become so afraid of driving the 154. A few nasty experiences like yours but mostly reading these head on stories every week! I don’t even like the idea of going up to the tavern anymore which is such a shame, I love it there!!!

Does anyone know how many of these 154 accidents involve locals? Or are they folks passing through and want to save 3 minutes on the 154 because Waze tells them so?

I hope everyone involved quickly recovers from their injuries. Does anyone have any thoughts about the feasibility of installing a center divider/barrier along 154? Given the amount of traffic on the road, I think it could save a lot of lives and prevent countless accidents.

I hate them, but putting a toll of even $0.25 would reduce traffic on the 154 and likely lead to fewer accidents. Besides the nominal amount of $$, the actual toll infrastructure would slow traffic down on the 154 and create an incentive to travel on the 101 instead.

I think it would do the opposite. Think about how often people drift toward the center line - every time I drive the pass, I see at least 5 people touch the centerline at some point. Now imagine that was a wall instead. Instant accident. Coupled with tailgating, this would make for even worse accidents.

it was terrible, white pick up truck drifted over into southbound lane and hit a van carrying 2 passengers head-on. They had to extract the driver of the van, helicopter was circling overhead, traffic backed up both ways - terrible!
