Highway 154 Intersection Confusion

I was wondering if at this intersection you stop at the first line with the rest of the traffic if all the lights are red or do you continue and stop at the second line? Keep in mind you're not going into the freeway you are going straight to turn left or right on State St from Highway 154.

CalTrans: It sounds as though it's past time to get a bucket of paint out there to prevent an accident or two!

There's no potential for an accident. Whether you stop a the first line or the second doesn't matter, danger-wise. This is probably why they've never bothered to fix the entire SNAFU.

you stop at the line if you are turning onto the freeway, you move up to the traffice light if you are turning onto state street.

That's a old picture that new hotel has a roof and plaster on it now and I believe they have had only two people working there one day a week .

You are entirely correct that this is all messed up. If you look back into Google Street View history, you will see that there is no limit line on the thru lane. Sometime between June 2016 and now it got added in error. Also the lane pavement markings are now incorrect. At State Street there should be left arrow and a right arrow pavement lane markings. Before when there was a motel across the intersection, you could go straight. New condos don't allow the same access. Signals were placed set back because of challenges in wiring and conduit connection, but in my opinion the on ramp signal should have additional sign on the mast arm, along with the lane configuration sign, that denotes that "signal is for 101 on ramp" or similar. https://goo.gl/maps/idNzBUVbcs42

Second line - the traffic light on the right has a green right turn arrow (repeated on the next signal) and the sign showing the lane movements (look below the signal, on the pole) implies it is referring to the "next" intersection, which actually has a right turn option. It's a stupid design, because the left-turn arrow on *the same pole* is for the "first" intersection. Further proof: The "first line" is newly painted (terrible decision, btw) - before, there was only a stop-line for cars waiting to turn onto the freeway - check Google maps satellite view to confirm, it is an older image than the streetview posted here. I agree it is SUPER confusing. It helps that there is zero danger in advancing to the second line.

When those lines were first drawn, I was intending to make a left turn onto Calle Real, following the lane around that crazy-wide island demarcated by diagonal lines. The driver behind me drove directly across the 'island' to pass me on my left and I nearly sideswiped them as I followed the legitimate lane. From that point on, I always straddle the lane and the island just in case someone else tries it.

What the posted photo does not show is the traffic light directly above the first line. If you cross that line on a red light (the one above the line) you'd be crossing on a red light. Hope that clears things up a bit.

No, that IS the traffic signal above the left line. You can see the second signal beyond the white van.

My mom and I argue about this daily. She stops at the first and I stop at the second.... another question... anyone have the problem with the intersection just behind this picture at 154 and Calle real.... dont get me started on that one!

Yes and people in the left turn lane for calle real go straight through the intersection in front of people turning left (on a green turn arrow). This happens daily!

The one behind that one totally confuses people. They think the left turn lane onto Calle real is the lane for the freeway

No stop sign or signal relates to the line, because the 101 onramp signal is left arrow and the State St. signal has its own line. Another consideration is that if nobody's in the 101 onramp lanes the signal may not detect cars in the State lane. The line may help draw attention of drivers in that lane, since sometimes cars will dart into it from the middle lane. Interesting question, and maybe someone will share an official CalTrans/CHP ruling.

I pass people stopped at that first line, it totally negates having a green arrow. Once passed, they get the hang of it.

By the way there's a hint in your picture, If you stop at the first line you'd be holding up folks who could be turning right on the green arrow like the white van shown.

Also that first line is new, it didn't used to be there. I wonder if it was a mistake by a striping crew.

that's my thinking on the matter as well. That intersection gets royally backed up so not pulling all the way forward there would make it worse

The second line, there is no traffic that can cross between the first and second line if you are turning left or right on State.

That limit line makes it rather confusing. The corner of the median should really extend to the limit line of those turning onto the freeway, and then the limit line for those going straight should be removed.

I continue to the second line closest to the intersection, can't guarantee that's the correct thing to do but it feels right
