Highway 101 Now Open in Both Directions

Highway 101 is now open in both directions.

All southbound lanes are open and in Gaviota one northbound lane is open.

Highway 101 southbound is now open with one northbound lane planned to reopen at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) Captain Michael Logie announced the reopening during a 2:00 p.m. press conference. 

Logie said Caltrans and crews are working diligently to get both lanes of Highway 101 north open but the rockslide in Gaviota taking time to fully clear. 

Highway 101 is the priority and once it’s fully reopened, crews will focus their attention on SR-154, which is riddled with several rock and mudslides, said Logie. 

SR-192 is open but does have several lcoations with overflow and debris in the roadway.

Caltrans reports Highway 101 North in Gaviota is expected to reopen no later than Tuesday evening.

The roadway shut down Monday after the storm caused rocknets to fall sending boulders and debris onto the road. Highway 154 also closed in both directions due to multiple rock and mudslides.

At 10:45 a.m., Caltrans District 5 stated their engineers and maintenance staff are currently working in the Gaviota area and are reporting the highway is expected to re-open no later than this evening.

Caltrans also provided an update on other road conditions along the Central Coast as of Tuesday morning:

  • Northbound US 101 is closed at State Route 150 near Carpinteria, near Sheffield Drive near Summerland and from Winchester Canyon Road near Goleta to Highway 1 north of Gaviota.

  • Southbound US 101 is closed at Milpas Street in Santa Barbara.

  • Highway 154 is closed from State Route 192 to the Junction with State Route 246 near Santa Ynez. 

  • Highway 246 is closed from Alamo Pintado Road in Solvang. 

  • Highway 1 is closed from State Route 166 West to Brown Road in Santa Barbara County.

  • Highway 41 West is closed from Ironwood Drive to San Gabriel Road near Morro Bay.

  • Northbound US 101 is closed northbound at 13th Street and southbound at 18th Street in Paso Robles.

  • State Route 198 is closed from Peach Tree Valley Road to the Fresno County line.

  • State Route 9 is closed from Big Basin Way to Monaco Lane and from Glen Arbor Road (lower) to Glen Arbor Road (Upper) in Santa Cruz County.

  • State Route 236 is closed from Little Basin Road to Big Basin State Park in Santa Cruz County.

  • Highway 1 remains closed in Monterey County from the Elephant Seal Vista Point to Palo Colorado.

  • Highway 1 has re-opened in both directions in Morro Bay.
