Highway 101 Construction Update: September 1 – September 14

Spotlight:  Crews will install temporary fencing to start the Santa Barbara South segment.

In Montecito, crews will begin installing underground supports (pile driving) for the new bridges. Please expect daytime noise during this work. Crews will also continue work on the new northbound lanes and off-ramp at San Ysidro Rd. The northbound lanes will remain divided by safety barriers between Hixon and Olive Mill Rds through summer 2025. In Summerland, crews are planting and mulching on northbound and southbound Highway 101. In the Padaro segment, crews will continue working on new median safety barriers on the freeway and slope paving at the South Padaro Undercrossing.

A look ahead:  Crews will begin vegetation removal in the Santa Barbara South segment, between Olive Mill and Hermosillo Rds, as early as Sept 15. Please expect day and night noise for vegetation clearing and chipping. In the Padaro segment, crews will grind pavement for final smoothness and traction beginning Sept 15. Please expect night noise.

Closures

Please drive safely through the corridor and remember to Slow for the Cone Zone. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph for safety throughout the construction areas. Two freeway lanes remain open in each direction during daytime hours. Please expect day and night work.

  • Northbound Highway 101
    • Sunday nights, 9:00 pm – 5:00 am, 1 lane:  Santa Monica Rd to Evans Ave
    • Monday – Thursday nights, 8:00 pm – 5:00 am, 1 lane:  Santa Monica Rd to Evans Ave
      • Sept 3 – 5:  on-ramp at N Padaro Ln
    • On-ramp at San Ysidro Rd, closed until mid-2025, drivers can use the northbound on-ramp at Sheffield Dr
    • Off-ramp at San Ysidro Rd, closed until mid-December 2024, drivers can use the northbound off-ramp at Sheffield Dr
  • Southbound Highway 101
    • Sunday nights, 10:00 pm – 7:00 am, 1 lane:  Evans Ave to Carpinteria Ave
    • Monday – Thursday nights, 8:00 pm – 7:00 am, 1 lane:  Evans Ave to Carpinteria Ave
    • On-ramp at Posilipo Ln, closed until spring 2026, drivers can use the southbound on-ramp at Sheffield Dr
  • N Jameson Ln
    • 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, Mondays – Fridays, flaggers will direct traffic as needed on N Jameson Ln between Sheffield Dr and San Ysidro Rd to enable crews to move equipment.
  • Lillie Ave/Via Real
    • Flaggers will direct traffic as needed to allow crews to mulch newly landscaped areas on northbound Highway 101.
  • Wallace Ave
    • Flaggers will direct traffic as needed to allow crews to plant large trees between Wallace Ave and southbound Highway 101.

Please note: consecutive ramps in the same direction will not be closed at the same time (unless where noted) to allow drivers to use a ramp before or after a closure. Highway 101: Santa Barbara South
The Santa Barbara South segment is located between Olive Mill and Hermosillo Rds.

  • Construction begins in September. Crews will install temporary fencing along the shoulders. Beginning as early as September 15, crews will remove trees and vegetation from the northbound and southbound shoulders and median. Please expect day and night noise during clearing and chipping.

Highway 101: Montecito
The Montecito segment is located between Sheffield Dr and Olive Mill Rd. \

  • Highway 101
    • Northbound freeway lanes
      • The northbound freeway lanes are divided by safety barriers between Hixon and Olive Mill Rds until the summer of 2025 (see graphic below) to provide space to construct the new northbound lanes. Montecito exits are accessible from the slow lane.
    • Northbound off-ramp at San Ysidro Rd
      • Crews will grade soils and work on new drainage improvements.
    • Northbound on-ramp at San Ysidro Rd
      • Crews will excavate soils and begin work on a new retaining wall.
    • Romero, San Ysidro, and Oak Creek Bridges
      • Crews will continue excavating soils and begin installing underground bridge supports (pile driving) on Sept 4. Please expect daytime noise. Crews will drive piles for all three creek bridges. Highway 101:  Summerland
The Summerland segment is located between Sheffield Drive and North Padaro Lane.

  • Landscaping
    • Flaggers will direct traffic on Wallace Ave near Highway 101 to allow crews to plant large trees (see photo above to see some of the large oaks at the project site). On northbound Highway 101, crews will apply mulch to newly planted areas. Please expect flaggers directing traffic as needed on Lille Ave and Via Real.

Highway 101:  Padaro
The Padaro segment is located between North Padaro Lane and Santa Claus Lane.

  • Highway 101
    • Crews will continue work on median safety barriers and concrete finishing (see photo above). The median barriers have a Blue Star Memorial design celebrating veterans. This is part of the World War 1 memorial between Santa Claus Lane and North Padaro Lane that will feature 108 new oak trees and a unique center median with oak leaf reliefs, a blue ribbon, and Blue Star plaques.     • New carpool lane and roadway signs will be installed.
  • S Padaro Ln Undercrossing
    • For the new bridge, crews will continue work on the slope paving and pedestrian improvements under the bridge (see photo below).
  • Southbound On-ramp at Santa Claus Ln
    • Crews will work on curbs, gutters, the cobblestone area between the ramp and freeway lane, and new sign supports.
  • N Padaro Interchange
    • Concrete Mix Site:  By mixing concrete on-site, the project saves an estimated 463,771 truck miles, reduces water use by 400,000 gallons (concrete mixed on-site uses less water), and saves taxpayers between $10-$15 million.
    • Concrete recycling continues by the northbound Highway 101 off-ramp at N. Padaro Ln.

Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara is a project undertaken by Caltrans and SBCAG in cooperation with local agencies to add a new carpool lane in each direction between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara.  Highway 101: Carpinteria is the first segment under construction as part of Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara project.
