A deadly traffic collision took place Monday on Highway 1 at the intersection of Santa Lucia Canyon Rd. The collision, involving two vehicles, resulted in injuries to several individuals and the tragic death of an 11-year-old girl.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash took place at approximately 4:55 p.m. near Vandenberg Village and Lompoc. Responding promptly to the scene were personnel from the CHP Area office and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, who undertook the preliminary investigations.

CHP states a 2020 Toyota Camry was driven by 65-year-old Jose Gonzalez of Lompoc that also carried passengers Luz Gonzalez, 59, and the 11-year-old girl. The Camry was stopped at a stop sign on Santa Lucia Canyon Rd., readying to make a left turn onto SR-1.

As Mr. Gonzalez initiated the turn, their vehicle was hit on the left side by a southbound 2005 Toyota Prius, driven by 21-year-old Shane Giles of Lompoc.

The crash’s impact necessitated immediate medical attention, and all individuals involved were transported from the scene by ambulance. Despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel, the young girl succumbed to her injuries at Lompoc Valley Medical Center.

This fatal accident prompted a closure of State Route 1 at Santa Lucia Canyon Rd. for approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. The closure facilitated the on-scene investigation led by local law enforcement, which is currently ongoing to determine the precise cause of the collision.

Further updates on the investigation and any forthcoming safety initiatives will be provided as more information becomes available.
