High Winds Create Potential for Power Outages

Source: County of Santa Barbara

Parts of Santa Barbara County are experiencing localized power outages.  Residents and businesses should prepare now to minimize the impact of these outages.

Here are some preparation tips for potential power outages:

  • Obtain battery- or crank-powered radios and flashlights.  Test batteries and purchase extras in case of extended outages.

  • Keep electronic devices fully charged.  Have a backup power source available

  • Do not use candles as these pose a significant fire hazard.

  • Place generators outdoors. Plug individual appliances directly into the generator using heavy-duty extension cords.  Connecting generators directly to household circuits creates “backfeed,” which is dangerous to repair crews.

Power outages may also impact traffic signals throughout the area. otorists and pedestrians are advised to proceed on roadways with caution and approach intersections as four-way stops.

Should people and motorists encounter downed power lines, stay away and call 911.

In the event of a power failure, radio stations countywide are prepared to broadcast updates that you can access with a battery-powered or car radio. Use this link to dowload a list of English and Spanish participating radio stations.
