In a solemn yet proud ceremony, the County of Santa Barbara paid tribute to five individuals for their exemplary acts of bravery in response to the courthouse bombing event that shocked the Santa Maria community.

The recognition took place during the recent Board of Supervisors meeting, shining a spotlight on the courageous deeds that arose in the face of danger.

On the morning of September 25, 2024, Nathaniel James McGuire, a 20-year-old resident of Santa Maria, threw an explosive device at the security check-in area of the Santa Maria Superior Courthouse leaving five people injured.

In the face of this danger, five individuals from different agencies acted swiftly to apprehend McGuire who was armed with explosives, firearms, and ammunition with suspected plans of a much larger attack.

Among those honored was Steve Neil, a courthouse security guard whose quick action during the critical moments of the bombing incident likely prevented further tragedy. Neil, a seasoned security professional with over three decades of service in Santa Maria and a British Army veteran, demonstrated exceptional valor by pursuing McGuire after he hurled the explosive device.

Neil’s bravery extended beyond the initial chase; he successfully subdued McGuire by his vehicle, where it was discovered the assailant was harboring additional weapons. This decisive intervention allowed for the swift arrival of law enforcement to secure the scene and apprehend the suspect, mitigating the potential for further harm.

The Board of Supervisors also celebrated the lifesaving efforts of four other community protectors: Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Nelson, California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Hanrahan, District Attorney’s Office Investigator Wayne Flick, and Santa Maria Police Officer Erik Hesch. Each played a pivotal role in the aftermath of the bombing, showcasing remarkable commitment to public safety and the well-being of Santa Maria residents.

Detective Erik Hesch noticed the unfolding chaos as he was approaching the courthouse and quickly responded, playing a critical role in ensuring the suspect was disarmed and taken into custody.

Their actions serve as a powerful reminder of the dedicated men and women who stand ready to protect and serve, ensuring the safety of all citizens.

Thanks to the quick thinking, courage, and teamwork of these individuals, countless lives were saved that day.
