Help Name Goleta’s First-Ever Climbable Monarch Butterfly

Source: City of Goleta

Our hearts are fluttering over a new climbing structure that will soon be installed at Berkeley Park located at Berkeley Road and Arundel Road. The City of Goleta is pleased to announce that our community will soon be able to enjoy the first-ever climbable Monarch Butterfly at this park location as well as other new equipment designed for children to enjoy!  But before this Monarch Butterfly takes flight, it needs a name and we need your help! The City is conducting a “Name the Monarch” contest to find the perfect match for this special recreation feature.

JoAnne Plummer, Parks and Recreation Manager, said, “The Monarch Butterfly is a well-loved symbol of Goleta and important to our residents, and this naming contest provides an opportunity for everyone to participate and suggest an appropriate and meaningful name for this special climbing structure custom-made just for Goleta.”

Here is how you can participate. Please complete our online contest entry form by March 31, 2021. Participants will be asked to provide a suggested name with a brief explanation as to why it is the best name for this butterfly. The contest entry form, available in English and Spanish, as well as additional information, is available here.

The Parks and Recreation Commission will review the list of entries at its upcoming meeting on April 7, 2021, and will recommend two to five finalists to the Naming Standing Committee. The committee will make a final recommendation that will be brought to City Council for consideration later this spring. Finalists will receive gift cards to local businesses in the amounts of $25 for the runner(s)-up if applicable, and $75 for the winner. In the case of duplicate entries, the first entry to be received will be recognized. Student groups are encouraged to participate.

Participants may also submit their entry by mail to Goleta City Hall at 130 Cremona Drive, Suite B, Goleta, CA 93117 ATTN: Butterfly Naming Contest. Mailed in entries must be POSTMARKED by March 27, 2021, to be considered. Printable entry forms in English and Spanish are available here.
