Heat Distressed Hiker Rescued in Montecito Sunday

Source: Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue (SBCSAR)

Just after 2pm [Sunday] afternoon, SBCSAR responded with Montecito Fire, AMR and Santa Barbara County Air Support for a hiker in distress having heat-related complications about 2 miles up from the trailhead.

Once a ground transport decision had been made due to the patient condition and ongoing treatment, the air support was cancelled and returned to service. Teams hiked into the subjects location and assisted Montecito Fire medics with loading the patient in the rescue litter basket for transport on the wheel down the trail.

On the way down the trail, numerous belay stations were setup to aid rescuers on the descent down the trail and in areas that were unstable. The patient and medic were transferred to a SAR vehicle for transport down the fire road and to the waiting ambulance for transport to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for additional care and evaluation.

SAR and Fire teams participated in a thorough debriefing following the call and returned to service.

  1. It’s not mental health but upbringing. Helicopter parenting, or as is now referred to as dozer parenting, is producing adults who can’t think for themselves but have hyper elevated self esteem. Common sense and basic safety rules don’t apply to them.
