It’s is the most recognized day of love, but how much are we spending on it? While the most memorable gifts cost nothing to very little, it doesn’t stop Americans from shelling out dough on the ones that make their heart go bump.

It’s expected that 53% of Americans will spend approximately $30 billion on Valentine’s Day goods.

The average spends for this day of love is $221.34. The five most common items purchased for the holiday and their average prices are:

• A box of chocolates ($15.11)
• Diamond earrings ($323.26)
• A dozen roses ($41.66)
• Dinner for two ($80.46)
• A bottle of champagne ($51.54)

According to Finder, roughly 43 million Americans — about 17% of the population — will get an unwanted Valentine’s Day gift in 2019. This calculates to about $9.5 billion spent on gifts nobody wants.
