It’s the Fourth of July in Santa Barbara! The long weekend honors America’s birthday with the epitome of summer happenings: beach, bbq, music, and fireworks.
Approximately 155 million hotdogs are devoured today and about 190 million pounds of beef and 700 million ounds of chicken are purchased two weeks leading up to the celebration. What’s the favorite dessert of today? It’s 500 million gallons of ice-cream.

Below are tips to keep your pet safe durin the fireworks and holiday.
We have the Flag Factory here in Carpinteria, the Stars and Stripes and any another kind of flag you’d want. No need to buy ones from China. Happy 4th of July! It is our son-in-law’s birthday. He said he was 6 before he realized all the fun and fireworks weren’t specifically for his birthday.
So happy it’s over for this year, I could cry.
There are now 8 dogs listed on Craigslist as lost/found. At 8:30 PM on the 4th we watched a huge flock of crows fleeing west, probably from their roosts at Milpas St. Obviously someone in that area had started “celebrating” early. Last night (actually 1 AM on the 5th) somewhere up near Grand Ave/Loma/APS some asshat set off what sounded like an M-80. We have a perfect view of the fireworks display from our front yard and we don’t even look because we know all the noise is causing so much heartbreak.

We went down and stood under the fireworks; they were beautiful, and the friendly good cheer of the crowd was a welcome change. Lately, people are so angry, me included. Something that colored the end of my evening was, we saw two separate incidences of frightened dogs, who had bolted and were running at a pace no one could keep up with. I do hope they are reunited with their owners, who are no doubt desperate to find them, but why bring your sweet pups into all that and take such a risk?
I’m a different mtndriver here, and we went and stood along Grand Avenue right above the old St Francis hospital. Great views. Later back at home heard a couple neighborhood dogs barking way late—usually they are in their owners’ bedrooms. Checked this morning and both were home. So sad so many go missing. By this time you’d think everyone would know to keep their animals secluded from the big bangs.
