Hair Cut Shame
Dear Edda,
I have been really good about staying at home during COVID. I have all of my groceries delivered, and haven’t gotten together with friends for months. My only real outings are to take walks every morning down by the beach, being sure to wear a mask and keep a safe distance from others. I have not been out to eat or to a hair salon for months.
A few days ago, I decided to cut my own hair because it was getting long and was in my face all the time. I watched several YouTube videos and followed along as best I could. It turned out terrible! As soon as I saw the result, I tried to fix it by cutting some more. It didn’t work. I am so embarrassed, I can’t even go for my walks anymore.
My regular hair stylist offered to sneak me into her salon one evening and repair the damage. I felt guilty, but agreed. Now she says she is too nervous to break the rules, so she can’t keep the appointment.
What should I do?

Dear Ann,
First of all, you should definitely not miss your walks. Wear a hat.
Secondly, while YouTube videos are invaluable for easy stuff like dry walling, plumbing, or building a semiconductor nuclear radiation detector, they are absolutely no place to go for a hair cutting tutorial. Consider this a lesson.
Also, remember that it’s just hair and it will grow out.

Dec 26, 2020 04:15 PMGive a call to Nancy Pelosi's local S.F. office and ask for help making an appointment with HER stylist. Shouldn't be any problem getting in - and you wouldn't even have to wear a mask!

Dec 27, 2020 08:35 AMI'm not defending her lol, she is disgusting and the whole thing was so symbolic about what is wrong in our country right now! But the hairstylist allowed it and then ratted her out. They should have turned her away or told her that masks were required, shown some integrity and been protective of their business, employees and other clients. Instead, they took care of her hair, got paid for it and then ratted her out. If they had morals to begin with then it would have been a non story! That's the problem, so many people only think the rules matter until they apply them to themselves, and here we are, surging and shutting down. ALL involved in it are culpable!

Dec 26, 2020 04:36 PMAsk your hair stylist to come to your home, both of you wear masks, then give her/him a generous tip for the privilege of a house call.

Dec 26, 2020 04:43 PMYes. Do this. Lots of stylists have been doing house calls to keep earning during the various levels of shutdowns. More like yard calls than house calls: sit outside.

Dec 26, 2020 05:29 PMHow truly important is it to have hair somewhat out of line ?
Count your blessing if that is your most important problem !
An awful lot of people will gladly trade their dismal state for what you consider to be yours !

Dec 26, 2020 06:36 PMYou hair stylist is afraid bc though he or she needs to earn a living and not getting money for being shut down, she either is scared to trust you, or she’s really is scared to break the rules and you shouldn’t be putting them in that situation. Did you know if they got caught they could lose their license? Did u know that she could be fined $10000? Did you know if caught they could be put in jail for 6 months to a year? Did you know a salon in northern ca had state police show up and treated like a drug raid with Gina’s and ammunition? People have been unfairly targeting spa and salon industry when ca public health has said they have not one evidence of spread coming from a salon or spa. Did you know a hair dresser doing a house call is just as “illegal” as them sneaking you into the salon? The best thing you could do is advocate against the unfairly targeted personal service industry and wait for them til we can legally open. No offense but you took to YouTube to cut your hair, you should definitely suffer the consequences of that decision. LOL. Just kidding, but what did you think would happen? You watched a video, your not suddenly a hairstylist now.

Dec 26, 2020 07:05 PMAlso, you had 4 months to support your stylist legally, but you didn’t show. I bet having a nice haircut feels pretty essential when u suddenly don’t have one anymore.

Dec 26, 2020 07:54 PMI recommended getting an outdoor haircut by a professional. But I’ve actually just let my hair grow. It’s a nice change of pace. The letter writer can just embrace her bad cut and focus on things that really matter. Most people don’t really care what you look like, as long as you’re clean.

Dec 27, 2020 09:28 AMI just recently cut my own hair, couldn't take it anymore. Sure it's not perfect but seriously who cares! You put a mask on and stay away from others anyway and if this person truly goes nowhere again, who cares! Good grief, first world problems! Use some baretts or something!!

Dec 27, 2020 09:50 AMI was a professional hair-dresser in L.A. & S.B..,yes, me!..
I advise; slick it down or find a "messy" style you can live with until it grows a little..
Experiment, play with it, but relax about it..it will grow back at about a 1/2 inch per month, & will be ready to try again soon.
