I swear we hear three or four gunshots shortly after 8pm tonight. In North Goleta by DPHS. Anyone else?
I heard these down in Winchester canyon – my dog was going nuts! Some people on Nextdoor said it was fireworks, but why would someone set off fireworks while it’s still light out? Wasn’t even dark yet!
They were fireworks. I could hear the crackling sound after the big boom. They’ve been doing this for a while now. It’s just teenagers being kids before they get sucked into adulthood and get a real asswhooping from the reality of life.

Also heard a ton of firecracker sounds (like a bunch of M80’s) last night on the Westside.
I agree. I’m not condoning it. I’m just stating the facts. Hopefully they caught them and the parents and cops can teach them that lesson. Kids will be kids, no matter what is all I was saying.
It’s the “adults” who have turned our surroundings into a powder keg through mismanagement of our forest land. Sparks are inevitable, we need to manage public lands to mitigate the fire danger. Don’t blame the kids! Let them have their fun and enjoy their youthful innocence! Hopefully they won’t be up-tight and joyless when they grow up like so many Santa Barbarians seem to be these days.
Yeah, if we could just get work crews out in the forests to rake leaves kids could set off their bottle rockets to their heart’s content. So you first… how much are you going to pony up to pay for this project?
CHIP OF SB….. hahahahahahahaha! Yes, blame forest management for wildfires that wipe out homes in Malibu and Ventura. They once had the greenest, most well-managed and best kept forests in the land back before the liberals took over, right? Right. And another great point, kids really should be able to play with fireworks without having to worry about setting massive fires. Yeah, god forbid the kids understand consequences….. wow.
Per Wikipedia, the suppression costs for the Thomas Fire were $230 million, and the total cost of the fire was over 2 billion. The costs are astronomical because our current strategy is to suppress all fires until we build up an overwhelming fuel load that results in a catastrophic fire that turns everything in its path into a moonscape. Managing our public land would cost less, make our communities safer, and result in many smaller and more controlled fires that are less devastating for the wildlife. The county figured out the solutions back in the 1960s, but they were never fully implemented. We could do even better today.
Fireworks should be illegal. I used to really think that was a buddy-duddy way to be when people said it, but now that I know the damage they do to our environment and to wildlife and our pets… it’s just not worth it for a couple seconds of a flash and bang.
