Tuesday's naked eye visible green flash lasting 1.2 seconds from the Isla Vista Bluffs

A collage of pictures taken 200 milliseconds apart of the green flash at sunset.  Normally, this flash is green as the red part of the spectrum is bent more (think red sunsets), and the blue part of the spectrum is scattered by our atmosphere (the reason the sky is blue).

In this picture sequence, the setting sun is multi colored due to atmospheric turbulence (the same thing that makes stars twinkle).

Also attached is an earlier green flash picture taken from Deveroux point, and it is green!

Nikon D500 camera, 300 mm lens, 500 mm lens.

What a wonderful collage of the elusive sight. I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit I have always believed what I was told decades ago, that only women can see the Green Flash. Silly me! Now I know cameras can record it. Who knew?

I was telling my roommate last saturday or sunday that I've watched 1000's of sunsets around the world for years looking for the green flash and that either A) they don't exist and are a hoax or B) I'm color blind :) Needless to say I was walking the dog under More Mesa at sunset and sure enough that same day I saw it clear as day for the last second or two the sun was up. 2 green flashes in the same week in SB ! Makes me wonder what "sun" I've been looking at all these years! Thanks for the great photos!

a-1640224733 is correct. The main subject of the picture was the green flash. The surrounding sunset and sky sets the scene and gives depth to the picture.

I could have uploaded seven individual pictures, but the collage where the first (biggest) green flash is the background, and the other green flash images were copied from tiny boxes around each subsequent green flash.
