We spotted this guy in the 1700 block of Hillside Road. Perhaps he was hunting for lizards, or gophers, or yappy little dogs?

The heron and an egret would dearly loved to eat my koi (they got one!), so I've had to net my pond to protect the fish. In Mission Canyon! Those large wings take those birds far from the sea or lagoon...

I once saw an osprey in flight in Santa Barbara that was carrying a large Koi in its talons. Those bright, pretty carp probably aren't as tasty as many fish, but they make easily spotted prey in ponds. Raccoons are often culprits when it comes to snacking on koi as well. Are you certain it was a heron or egret that snatched up your fish? Just curious. Glad you netted your pond to prevent future losses though. :)

PHANTOM: Prairie dogs are out on the prairies. If we spotted one around here, that would be nothing short of miraculous.

Such elegant, beautiful birds. We saw one at our State Park campground squatting down like a cat, creeping up on a gopher hole. He got it, huge gopher, and it was a battle getting him out of his hole but the Heron won.
