Governor Gavin Newsom pushed back on President Donald Trump’s claim that a federal “fraud investigation” into California has been launched.

The exchange came after a Truth Social post by Trump, which prompted a response from Newsom’s office disputing what it described as false and misleading claims.

In the post, Trump described California as “deeply corrupt” and claimed that federal authorities had launched an investigation into the state’s handling of federal funds. The president, however, did not provide specific details on the nature of the investigation or which agency would be conducting it.

“California, under Governor Gavin Newscum, is more corrupt than Minnesota, if that’s possible??? The Fraud Investigation of California has begun,” Trump wrote.

Newsom’s office rejected the accusations, saying the allegations were misleading and unsupported, and cited audits, law enforcement actions, and publicly available records showing how state and federal funds are monitored and enforced.

The exchange comes amid reports that the Trump administration is considering pausing federal funding to several Democratic-led states, including California. The proposed pause could affect billions of dollars tied to child care assistance, cash support programs, and social services for low-income families.

The proposed pause could reportedly affect more than $10 billion in federal funding nationwide.

The programs potentially impacted include Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the Child Care Development Fund, and federal social services grants administered through the Department of Health and Human Services.

According to the Trump administration, the pause is intended to prevent fraud and ensure federal funds are used legally. However, no public evidence has been released linking California’s social service programs to large-scale fraud.

The potential pause could place pressure on hundreds of thousands of California families who rely on federal support for child care and basic income assistance.

Democratic leaders have criticized the proposal, calling it politically motivated and arguing that it disproportionately targets Democratic-led states rather than addressing specific wrongdoing.

As of now, there is no confirmed federal investigation into California, and no funding freeze has officially taken effect.

Newsom’s administration says state funds are fully accounted for, while federal agencies have not issued formal guidance on any enforcement action.

    • ZIPS – what should Newsom be scared of? A dirty rapist who protects pedophiles lying about fraud that exists far more in red states than in CA?

MAGA has always been a joke but whole world is done laughing now. Sounds like there might start to be some repercussions for the filth who are destroying our nation. If anyone should be scared, it’s the poorly educated, racist simps who are out there shooting US citizens, the unqualified POS’s in his cabinet, and old rapey the lying criminal wind bag who is quickly declining, both physically and mentally. You guys had your year of idiocy and cruelty. The world, and real Americans, aren’t going to let this go much longer. Get your bootstraps polished, you’re gonna need them soon!
