Goleta to Host Meeting on Tree Replacement at Fire Station 10

Source: City of Goleta

The City of Goleta will host an informational meeting about the Fire Station 10 Tree Replacement Plan on Saturday, September 25, 2021, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Shores Open Space near Santa Barbara Shores Drive and Seagull Drive. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Fire Station 10 is a new fire station proposed at 7952 Hollister Avenue and approved by the Goleta City Council in December 2018, after a long and collaborative process with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. The California Coastal Commission also approved construction of the station in May 2019. A special condition of the Coastal Commission requires planting of 36 native trees in the Coastal Zone to replace eucalyptus trees that will be removed during construction. In addition to new tree plantings at the Fire Station 10 site, 41 native trees are proposed for the offsite tree replacement plan at the Santa Barbara Shores location. Construction of Fire Station 10 and the offsite tree planting is anticipated to begin in 2022.

The Santa Barbara Shores site was selected for offsite tree planting due to is location within the Coastal Zone and the current lack of native creek trees within the proposed planting area. The concept plan adds 41 oak and sycamore trees to the Santa Barbara Shores site, to enhance creek habitat. None of the existing trees at this open space will need to be removed.

At the informational meeting, City staff will present the concept plans, discuss the project, and be available to answer questions. The community is encouraged to attend. As a courtesy to others, please consider wearing a face covering when within six feet of fellow attendees.
