Update by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office

Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a Goleta man for the attempted murder of his roommate. On Monday, August 23, 2021, at approximately 12:40 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies were dispatch with County Fire and American Medical Response (AMR) to a possible stabbing in the area of Tecolote Avenue and Aguila Avenue. When deputies arrived, they contacted the victim who indicated that the suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Halbert Rodriguez of Goleta, had hit him in the head with an unsharpened sword causing serious injury. The victim told deputies that the suspect was inside of a residence in the 5700-block of Aguila Avenue.

Deputies spotted the suspect in the doorway of the residence and requested that he step out to speak with them, but he refused. Additional units including K9s, Air Support, Special Enforcement Team and the Crisis Intervention Team responded to assist. Deputies enlisted help from the suspect’s mother who was able to convince him to step outside where he was taken into custody without further incident at 1:35 p.m.

Rodriguez is receiving medical attention for minor injuries before being booked at the Main Jail for attempted murder (felony). His bail amount will not be available until after booking. The victim was transported by AMR to an area hospital and is expected to recover.

Second machete crime in the past few days - who even uses or carries machetes as their personal weapon of choice in this town. Large, bulky and heavy, good for bush-whacking but as a personal assault weapon. Do they sell them at garden supply stores? What gives with machetes and this uptick in those who are choosing them for deadly assault.

<who even uses or carries machetes as their personal weapon of choice in this town. > I gave up my machete a long time ago and switched to a pick ax.

Suspect in custody, Code 4. Transported to GVH for medical clearance. Turned out the weapon was a blunt-edged replica sword, not a machete.

SBCSO update - "step outside where he was taken into custody without further incident ...".
Then the very next statement: "Rodriguez is receiving medical attention for minor injuries..."
so apparently the "Victim"(expected to recover) wasn't the only injury?

BICYCLIST - good point, how was the suspect injured? In a fight with the victim? If his injuries weren't somewhat significant, he wouldn't have been "treated" first before jail.

Most suspects are taken to the hospital for clearance before going to jail. Maybe he got less lethal, zapped, or pepper sprayed or maybe just a take down or it could have been a mental health check, or he injured himself.

This is one of the unfortunate trickle down effects of the outrageous cost of housing. It's pretty impossible to rent your own place anymore, even when you make more than twice minimum wage. It can be difficult living with strangers. God forbid one of them gets angry and isn't as stable as you thought!
