Thank you to the more than 400 people who took our community interest survey on bringing a bike share pilot program to Goleta! Bike share programs are popular in cities throughout California, including our neighbor City of Santa Barbara. The City of Goleta is considering a bike share pilot program that would offer bikes on-demand, providing residents and visitors with quick and easy access to some of Goleta’s most popular destinations. The results from the survey will help the City Council decide if a bike share program is appropriate for our community.

City of Goleta Sustainability Manager Cindy Moore said, “We are very appreciative that so many people took the time to give their feedback. We received a lot of thoughtful responses that will help the City Council to consider the future of bike sharing in our community.”

The survey was available in English and Spanish, and open for three weeks (June 28 – July 19). It included 17 questions in six categories: demographics, current transportation habits, bike share support, bike share operational details, a mapping element, and additional comments.

Over 80% of people who responded to the survey either lived or worked in the City of Goleta. On average, respondents were supportive of bringing a bike share to Goleta, with 66% of people rating their support as either a 4 or a 5 on a scale of 0-5. The most liked benefits of bike share were positive environmental impact, convenience, reduced traffic congestion, fun, and improved health. The most common concerns were street safety, access to bicycles, and cost to use a bicycle. Most people preferred a bike share program that operated regionally with a docked system. The most common places people said they would start and end their bike rides were shopping centers, Old Town, parks and open space, City of Santa Barbara, and Isla Vista.

The bike share survey results will be presented to the City Council Energy/Green Issues Standing Committee in September for their consideration and direction regarding next steps.

I would voice your concerns to CC members directly/individually thru email. I did during scooter invasion, and included a video of scooters being driven on sidewalk in Old Town, running stop light, and flying by entry at SC market. Can you imagine more bikes in Old Town!? Terrible idea.

Almost like a Cable news survey where they ask leading questions. The survey avoids the simple question if people want a Goleta bike share : Yes or No. Instead the survey has loaded questions that appear to attempt to drive an outcome. I think the corporate for profit biz working to install this wrote the survey not the City of Goleta The written survey written comments seem to be more telling how those who responded really think and its not too pretty, comments like :
"Fix our roads!! Instead of new programs"
"Giant headache waiting to happen. I suspect this will lead to more accidents What a mess" & "Goleta City requires focus on current very poor condition of city road infrastructure - NOT any further expenditures on very low use and questionably high cost programs"
" Costs seem to be a little high. At $7 for an hour (or part thereof), I WILL drive my vehicle" & "I have seen the bike system in downtown Santa Barbara and I believe it detracts from an aesthetic appeal of the areas where the bikes are docked." & "Will lead to more bright green painted streets that spoil the aesthetics"

I support bike share in Goleta. In my opinion the wording of the survey question was pretty good:
"If the City works to address your top concerns, how supportive would you be of a bike share pilot program in Goleta?"
On a scale of 1-5 (5=highest) the median score was 4.

My comment in their poll of course was never answered. 'How are helmets to be supplied?' Are we expecting the riders to bring their own helmets? Are helmets going to be strapped onto the bikes? Both are unworkable and the people running this loaded survey know this but are keeping unanswerable questions from being asked.

You are 100% correct. If the survey had simply been a yes or no to electric bikes, it would have lost by a landslide. Most likely, the bike rental company is somehow a “friend of the council.” Grubby, but it seems likely.

I took the fuzzy survey and clearly it was written to give the City Council coverage for what they knew would be an unpopular decision.

It’s a pattern with them. They held a fun help draw the new election districts last night so they could claim community involvement. You can bet the Council is going to ignore or skew that input when they gerrymander the districts to their benefit.

If you think the City Council is working for the citizens of Goleta, then you REALLY haven’t been paying attention.

We need to all work hard to get rid of the lifetime council members and get some that actually are working for us. Term limits would be a great first step.

So you would rather the City spend your tax dollar based on less information, than more? Did you read the survey? Not sure what "leading questions" you're referring to, and there are also literally hundreds of open-end answers included in the provided links.
