Gene “Vito” Gallego

Gene can be remembered for his kind heart, gentle soul, hard-working spirit and the willingness to always make sure everybody around him was happy, taken care of and well fed. He grew up in East Los Angeles with all of his 5 brothers. Worked for Bethlehem Steel Co. Later retired in Santa Barbara and became a community hero by working as a custodian for the Goleta Valley School Dist. and volunteering at the Senior Community Center.  In 2000, he was awarded a Medal of Honor by the Republic of Korea for his noble and sacrifice for his service in the Navy during the Korean War.

He adored his “corazoncito” wife Dolores and always treated her like a Queen. Complimented her each day. He was admired by his two daughters, Christina and Denise, who thought of him as their “Superman”. He was so very proud of each and every one of his grandkids. Gene loved to frequent the Thrift Store, workout each day at the YMCA, grab a burger and fries, do yard work and try his luck at the Chumash Casino.
