I discovered this growing in a pot in my backyard. It sort of looks like an ear! What type of fungi is it?

Definitely not Chicken of the Woods.

When you hold it up to your ear can you hear the woods?

I posted this. It was growing in a pot with a succulent and it did have a bit of shredded bark in the pot.

Does not look like chicken of the woods to me. Top surface all wrong, texture doesn't look right either, and it doesn't look like a shelf fungus. I'm with Mountainman, don't be advising eating fungi from photos, even experts die sometimes.

Let's hear it, OP. Were there wood chips or any wood in that pot?

The poster said it was in a pot. Nifty looking fungus, whatever it is. Thanks, poster, for the photo

Hmmm.... I just looked that up and the photos I'm seeing don't look anything like that. I find it's really difficult to identify a fungus with a single picture. They also grow on trees, not in pots. I'd want to see the underside, the stem, and know the details of where it emerged (what was in the pot?) IMO- it's extremely dangerous and unkind to identify an unknown as something edible. https://www.mushroom-appreciation.com/chicken-of-the-woods.html https://foragerchef.com/chicken-of-the-woods-mushrooms/

You have to admit, though, that to eat a fungus based on the opinion of an anonymous stranger on an internet forum is deserving of a Darwin Award... or to say it more kindly... isn't very smart. Please be smart about eating unfamiliar fungi/toadstools.
