Several years ago Edhat published my pic of this massive rock that I called "Sponge Bob" inspired by the unusual look of it. So squared off with a well-placed center cave you might call it Art rather than Bob. A local avid hiker asked exactly where it is, and that led me on a quest for the location. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't find it on gMaps or on subsequent flights in the area. I finally found it! In the more overhead view of Sponge Bob the vegetation is flattened so I wondered if a mountain lion lives there. As you can see in these other pix, Bob has interesting neighbors too. In the bigger cave next door I noticed a black shape, and found a closer pic that leads me to wonder if that's Carrion Cave. Can you ID that black shape? Shall I post the exact GPS coordinates? Has anyone here already found and/or hiked to these rocks via the nearby trails?

Does this cave have Chumash paintings in it?

I concur with the Turkey Vulture ID. Condors usually lay the egg on the floor of the cave. No nesting material. Turkey Vulture nests are not much either. (I am sure there are exceptions to no nest material. They might take over a nest from another species.)

Anon, thanks for weighing in on whether to post the location. I thought about it a bit and can see strong arguments on both sides. Biggest cases for withholding it for me are the joy of discovery hikers could have, and potential disruption for the wildlife that seem to use the spot. In favor of sharing it for me are for people like that hiker who asked in 2015 who is one of the few who'd actually make the arduous climb, for any other scientists and explorers, for other pilots, and for those like me who are just curious where something is even though they're unlikely to go there. Anyone else here have opinions on sharing the location?

It does look like rocks along Gav Pass as you point out Reed, but unlike those it's fairly high on the mountain and not next to a major creek. No visible creek at all in fact. Anonymous (or non-subscriber), it did feel good to finally find it again but mostly surprising since we'd flown past there probably a dozen times in the years since the first discovery and never noticed it. I don't think it's visible from 101, and only stands out at a particular range of altitudes - higher than we usually fly along that coast. Even knowing where it is, finding it on gMaps took a while because it looks so different and plain from above.

I wonder about water too Homers, but it's far from any established stream. Water certainly goes past there in heavy rain events, since it's part way down the slope. But at least in recent millennia it must be pretty rare. There are two ways I can imagine Bob getting that central cavelet: hard rain from the South pounding the sandstone making that texture on the face and eroding a soft spot in the middle; or life - either ever larger birds and critters chipping away and/or leaving acidic droppings, or humans making a cozy vantage point.

I like TV-bird as a name for that critter, Z. :) I wondered if it might be a condor, didn't think so because it doesn't look big enough, but thought it might be a secret nesting location. I don't know what their nests look like, but the dead grass & twigs led me to think it is a nesting area maybe for several "TVs" - then I wondered why the rocks aren't covered with droppings, and pondered whether they're smart enough to do their biz elsewhere to avoid attracting predators - then I imagined how easy it would be for a predator to enter a nest there. So I guess it's just a handy perch, well placed on the mountain between here and Gaviota with an expansive view of the coast.

Not everything and every place needs human attention. I say leave location for others to discover.

Congratulations on finding it! Very satisfying for you, I'm sure. I remember that post.

The first picture makes me think of the eye sockets of a skull . Is water close by ?

Nesting, or maybe just resting Turkey Vulture - pretty cool if its nest is those rocks. Their nests are almost impossible to find.

Looks like a TV-bird (turkey vulture).
