Found Military Explosives Safely Detonated at Pershing Park

Update by Santa Barbara Police Department
August 23, 2020

On Saturday, August 22, 2020, at approximately 12:30 P.M. the Santa Barbara Police Department received a call from a resident in the 300 Block of Ladera Street – reporting they found military explosives in a storage shed. The devices were novelties of a deceased military veteran.

Responding Officers called the County bomb squad to assess the items. That team verified several live military explosive devices.  Military resources from Vandenberg Air Force Base arrived on scene to further evaluate a strategy to render the devices safe.

Due to the age of the devices and possible instability, the military explosives team recommended detonating the items rather than transporting them back to the military base. Detonating the devices at the residence was not viable because of the proximity to nearby homes.

A safety plan was devised to detonate the devices in a nearby park that could accommodate a large safety radius. Prior to transport, the Police Department evacuated Pershing Park and notified local businesses. No other evacuations were deemed necessary. The Santa Barbara Police Department escorted the military to the park approximately a block-and-a-half away from the original scene.

At approximately 6:50 P.M., the military rendered the devices safe inside the park with the help of Police.

Police activity in the 300 block of Ladera Lane. The perimeter is set up. I missed the original call and am unsure what is going on but the residence is evacuated.
