A Foodbank of Santa Barbara County truck carrying 4,600 pounds of food overturned in Lompoc on Monday morning.
The refrigerated truck was heading south from the Foodbank’s Santa Maria warehouse to the Lompoc branch of the United Boys & Girls Club with supplies for the SAFE Food distribution.
In the process of a left-hand turn at an intersection near Vandenberg Air Force Base, the truck flipped onto its right side. No injuries were sustained and traffic was able to continue on the road. The truck’s driver and passenger were National Guard troops deployed with the Foodbank.
Trip logs indicate that the truck never exceeded speed limits and contents were under net weight, which means the cargo was below capacity load. The truck was carrying about 4,600 pounds of mixed produce, rice, beans, cheese, milk, cereal and water worth $6,500.00, according to the Foodbank.
“The Foodbank is grateful that no injuries were sustained, and for the help of our dedicated National Guard volunteers who have been invaluable in our ability to serve more than double our normal numbers of community members with more than twice as much food as normal for this time of year. This unprecedented expansion of Foodbank operations has resulted in a parallel load on our staff, volunteers and truck fleet,” said the Foodbank in a public statement.
Was any of the food able to be salvaged?
If Lompoc is as risky COVID-wise as the media has been saying, maybe they shouldn’t be shipping food through there?
They weren’t going through Lompoc. They were going TO Lompoc to distribute food.
Given the second photo… seems the truck was largely empty, or extremely tightly packed at the front of the trailer, which gives on hope for intact packaging….

Yep – was an observation of the picture. Didn’t need for a re-read of the article.
Wait. They shouldn’t send food to a place that is covid risky?? Because those who are at-risk don’t need to eat?
Most crushing news I’ve had in a long time. Does anybody know whether the refrigerator truck can be put back into service quickly, and how much of the load could be saved? This is just terrible news for a Foodbank contributor! What a waste. Glad there were no injuries.
