When my neighbor was shredding the large Agave plants, that were next to the sidewalk, I put Vaseline on the tips of the leaves !!! Stopped her from doing that ever again !!! AND, it also stopped the teenagers from shredding the leaves too !! My neighbor finally admitted to doing that, and told me she did it, because she didn't like Agaves....

They apparently have a very large root network and will send up new invasive plants all over. Agree, the owner should thank the thieves. But chances are a new replacement will quickly sprout from the tap roots left behind. They are lovely in bloom and a nice thorny deterrent as a landscaping barrier, but make sure you want a long and lasting relationship with them once you plant them.

the mystery is WHY...as this plant/vine does not do well transplanted so was the motive to get rid of it?

I have had plants dug up and taken from my front yard. It is an invasion, regardless of how you feel about bougainvilla.
