I live near Hollister avenue and it smells very strong of fish. The scent drifts towards Anita lane. I've heard it means that there is something dead in the area but not a vial source. If anyone knows any info please comment. Thank you, any info helps.

As long as they aren't using rodentcides and bee killing poisons...

Mystery solved. Apparently the avocado farm on Hollister between walnut and San Marcos lane is fertilizing with fish emulsion.

I'll bet Porter & Das are involved with that stinky operation somehow.

That fish stink is most likely Bruce Porter out trying to push his deceitful message onto the Goleta & IV voters. He's backed by big oil, big developers & many other out of county & state people & organizations. I wonder why? "Be like Das!"

My neighbor and my family have been smelling it since Monday morning off and on near Walnut Lane and Hollister, behind Lane Farms. Very strong ammonia like smell Monday and Tuesday morning around 8:30am. It dissipated pretty quickly those days. Not as strong Off and on in the evening & night. I can smell it now, it is not so strong now and more fishy. We thought it was something that died or a broken sewer line.
I put in a call to the Air Pollution Control District hotline yesterday morning and an inspector came out but we couldn't find a source. If you smell it please call them at To register a complaint, at 805-961-8810, and supply the following information. (messages can be left anytime)
Your name, address and phone number.
Location and time that you observed an odor, or smoke, gases or particles, and any additional observations.
Description of the problem, and its effects on you.

Maybe these local farmers are in cahoots with the Carpinteria pot farms and trying to prove all ag can be stinky; not just Carpinteria pot farming?

You live behind a farm and you perceive an ammonia-like odor? Gosh, golly, gee-whiz.

The greater majority of dead animals, human or otherwise, give off a stench that is quite unlike the smell of fish/crustaceans/sea mammals, live or dead. You really can't equate the miasmic, horrid smell of them. Do you think the smell may be coming from Atascadero Creek (near you)? Maybe one of your neighbors gutted some fish in his/her backyard? Look skyward. If you see circling Turkey vultures, that's a sure indication of dead animal somewhere nearby, but likely not fish in nature.
