First responders and partner agencies involved in a dramatic and technically demanding industrial rescue in Guadalupe last year were honored Thursday with the prestigious CAL FIRE Director’s Award for their life-saving efforts.
The award recognizes the heroic actions of crews on August 29, 2023, when they were called to a scene where a patient was trapped in heavy equipment with critical injuries. Responders from multiple agencies engaged in a grueling operation that lasted over three and a half hours.
Throughout the intricate extrication process, fire crews worked with precision to free the individual while medical personnel provided constant, on-scene care.
In its announcement, CAL FIRE San Luis Obispo County Fire Department highlighted the event as a benchmark for inter-agency cooperation. “This is what partnership looks like,” the department stated, emphasizing that the successful rescue was “made possible through skill, coordination, and constant medical care.”
This is the second time these crews have been formally recognized for their actions. In November, the responders were celebrated during a “SLO Moment” at the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors meeting, receiving local commendation for their bravery and professionalism.
The Director’s Award represents one of the highest honors bestowed by CAL FIRE, reserved for acts of exceptional service and dedication.
The department concluded its announcement with a message of gratitude for the team’s commitment: “Proud of everyone who answered the call.”
A video accompanying the announcement was also released, showcasing the intense, coordinated teamwork that was crucial to saving the patient’s life.
