Santa Barbara County Firefighters were able to save a house after the use of fireworks caused an attached carport on fire Saturday evening.

At 9:50 p.m., crews responded to the 6200 block of Westmoreland in Goleta for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival crews made an aggressive attack that kept the fire in check, preventing it from spreading into the attic and attached home, which was the direction of the burning fire, said Captain Daniel Bertucelli.

It was determined the cause of the fire was due to fireworks.

Firefighters are performing salvage operations and mopping up the scene to ensure the fire is completely out.

  1. That’s the question: was the Goleta house fire a result of the owner’s irresponsible behavior or a neighbor’s? If the former, I can only hope that his/her insurance doesn’t pay a nickel. If the latter, I’d like to see the perp found guilty and then die in a grease fire. This kind of irresponsibility is NOT acceptable.

  2. It would be interesting to see how the respondents on this correlated with mask/don’t mask and what channel/stations they get their political news from, and how they align freedom-of-choice and responsibilty-for-their-choice in daily life.

  3. Land of the Free and Home of the Brave! Let Freedom Ring, thank you for the fireworks show across the basin. Celebrate this great nation one loud night a year, wear a mask or not, watch your favorite news any channel and be a proud American! Many have died for your opportunities, you can enjoy it or not!

  4. Since you know who and where he is, someone should have reported him. What was interesting on the Eastside last night, Franklin School area east, mostly, where there are quite frequent police patrols, there were no police, although fireworks were going off from a little after 8 until almost 11. Some were so elaborate, the kind seen at the beach and not just from one location but four or five. Luckily, no fires.

  5. And some of those who fought for the freedom of this great nation it used to be greater Have PTSD and the fireworks tortured their souls but some of you don’t care about them you just care about you and yours.

  6. The Mt. View area had some psychos? dumb-bells? celebrating their brand of freedom by endangering the property, lives and freedom of others in the middle of a Covid pandemic, too. I’d love to see them fined and moved to a motel in Santa Maria at their own expense for a month.

  7. Roger – you are spot on. For those that don’t care about the discomfort and terror that animals are experiencing, can you at least consider those that you are trying to honor that have residual effects from being in a war time environment…. maybe explosions are not the best things.

  8. The East Side Fireworks were of course shot away from their original starting point but mostly in the neighborhood I’m surprised nothing caught but then again maybe they were shot off by pros..There were BOLO’S over the scanner for fireworks though I did not hear any for the East Side or Grand Ave. I don’t blame cops for not responding many times there is gun fire and they could get hit.

  9. It’s just west of La Cumbre Peak, where the radio towers are. They are now able to park cars behind the tower facility, so they’re out of sight. There is a water cistern across the road and below that, facing the city, is more ‘camp sites’. There is/was a stand of pine trees next to the access road leading to the towers…. there was a fire there… 10+ years ago.

  10. It sounded like y’all were bombing Baghdad last night. My pets were completely freaked out and it didn’t do much for my nerves either. Did anyone have permits for their own fireworks? One area in particular seemed to be setting them off up until 10pm, as if complying with a noise ordinance…and then numerous others in the surrounding ‘hood seemed to set theirs off in response.
We have an ongoing pandemic, folks are jobless, and the last thing we need are fires around here.

  11. Don’t know what your stance is on the beach closures, but would this not have been a direct correlation, no beach allowed, head for the heals…party people like to party…”gotta fight for your right tooooo paaaaaaaaartaaaay!”-bestie boys song was on blast nationwide lastnight…

  12. In general it is really sad to see all the hate towards neighborhood fireworks on 4th of july…would you rather had the beaches open and less neighborhood fireworks??? Complain about it, just pick one….geeesshuz people!!!!

  13. Sad what the booms and crashes due to dogs and some folks with sensitive ears or PTSD. A small black and white sheltie type dog run past us on our walk at 8:30 last night at an incredible speed, apparently scared. We waited a few minutes to see if an owner would appear. About an half hour later, a man ran past us with another small dog in his arms but suddenly stopped turned and asked if we had seen a small black and white dog. We were about two miles from where we saw the dog. We tried to explain where we saw it but the man didn’t seem to recognize the street names or area and kept calling for it.

  14. My poor dog was so freaked out. I had even given her at sedative but it didn’t have much effect. It was a miserable evening into the night. Explosions/rockets everywhere. I am sure there will be some idiots setting off some leftovers tonight.

  15. Correction, they have neighbors on all sides of them. Including an open space with densely populated evergreen trees. Just bc they are a corner doesnt mean that theyre selfish irresponsible behavior shouldnt go unnoticed. They put their entire neighborhood in jeopardy and used our tax dollars to boot. Hopefully a fine will be placed possibly even a night in jail will suffice.

  18. DTOM – These unpermitted fireworks are illegal for good reason. It’s called fire hazard and intrusive noise. How would you feel about a few people walking around your block for three hrs. in the evening with a bass drum, cymbals, and a trumpet, celebrating a birthday while throwing an occasional lit book of matches here and there?

  19. We were keeping watch on E. Camino Cielo… saw all the fireworks going off downtown, IV, Moore Mesa, Ward Memorial Blvd, Hope Ranch…. and Goleta. Heard the call go out for a structure fire in Goleta. Really. What could have caused that? Thank you to all those that visited the Mountain this evening. Thank you campers that came up with electric lanterns, or those who just utilized the moon light. Our collective mountain communities went to bed with a sigh of relief…. with the exception of the reinvented party site just west of La Cumbre Peak. They had camp fires in the tall grass…. nearly 150 people camping and partying during Memorial Day Weekend. They had fireworks tonight, 20+ cars, with another 15 cars parked at La Cumbre Peak. At least 10 tents at the Pines. Shooting off fire works tonight…. San Roque, Mission Canyon, Montecito – this is your problem. Our hands are tied and our plate is full. Just know it is there.

  20. There’s always some degree of shenanigans up here on the 4th, but when they announced the beach closure, there was definitely a collective “Oh, sh#t!” that emanated from the mountain communities.

  21. 11:57 – How does that sound “strange?” Hot grease can pose quite a risk. And to the person here or the other thread, this is exactly why setting off a firework is not always negligence per se. The law was enacted to prevent errant fireworks and sparks from causing fires, not to prevent hot grease in a bbq igniting. Not going into a per se argument, but just had to bring it up. I bet NONE of you thought it was as innocent as this, if it is true. Assumptions folks, you all know what they go to u and me….

  22. I think most people on both sides enjoy fireworks. Just not being launched into their houses and potentially causing their house to burn down. Their are safer places to launch them other than over a neighborhood.

  23. Professional fireworks are launched with compressed air. Homegrown firewards are launched with gunpowder and are more toxic. Yet another reason to come up with a different way to show how much you love this country.

  24. Would fire investigators care to comment on how this fire actually started, i.e., who is believed to have set off the fireworks in question; specifically, the house’s occupant(s), or neighbors? They seem to be strangely quiet about this.

  25. I learned from a neighbor of the incident that parents supervised their little kids in setting off sparklers. The parents then disposed of them in a barbecue pit, and their heat later set fat drippings on fire with no one present.
