Fireplace Safety Reminder

Source: Santa Barbara City Fire Department

The Santa Barbara City Fire Department would like to remind everyone that fire danger increases when people are heating their homes. It is important to have your fireplace cleaned and inspected annually.

In 2009-2013, heating equipment was involved in an estimated 56,000 reported U.S. home structure fires, with associated losses of 470 civilian deaths, 1,490 civilian injuries, and $1.0 billion in direct property damage. These fires accounted for 16% of all reported home fires.

The leading factor contributing to home heating fires (30%) was failure to clean, principally creosote from solid-fueled heating equipment, primarily chimneys. (According to the National Fire Protection Association)

Have chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop
sparks or embers from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.

Enjoy your holiday season safely.
